Dear knitter,

Welcome to your Saturday!

The MDK Gem for March is here! We’re celebrating the extraordinary matchup of designer Jeanette Sloan and yarnmaker Aimée Gille, the stars of MDK Field Guide No. 15: Open

This month we’re shining the MDK Gem sunbeam on Jeanette’s popular Mood Cardigan, with its easy lace and simple construction. It’s convertible—wear it upside down or upside … up!—to suit your mood. It’s a great winter-into-spring piece, and a superfun portable knit.

The yarn, Helix by La Bien Aimée, is unique in the world: a laceweight, custom-milled blend of Gotland and Falklands Merino wool.

The gem: When you order any quantity of La Bien Aimée Helix, now through Wednesday, March 22, we will include the free ebook PDF download edition of Field Guide No. 15: Open, starring Jeanette’s Mood Cardigan and four more modern lace designs.

Psst … if you’re an MDK Field Guide subscriber for 2023, this is a perfect moment to use your 10% subscriber coupon code, the one we emailed to you on March 6. You’ll save 10%!

Meanwhile . . .

We had a big time on MDK this week.

We have never clipped and saved something so fast! Jen Arnall-Culliford brought us a brilliant Little Lesson video tutorial on duplicate stitch, the star of the Rosy Mittens and so many knitwear embellishments.

Just two colors, but plenty of pop. MDK’s first knitter, Nell Ziroli, cooked up a graphic counterpoint to Arne & Carlos multicolor Setesdal Hat. Plus: a sassy sprinkle of embroidery.

Ann and Kay are knitting the same project at the same time, and all’s right with the world. Ann’s Kos Neckwarmer has taught her some lessons. Kay jumped on the Great Dickie-along bandwagon with a blue and green colorway, and shared great alternative dickie designs by Arne & Carlos.

There’s plenty of time to join the Great Dickie-along; it’s fast and fun, and a great way to deploy leftover colors of Norwegian Wool (even if you have to create those leftovers).

This weekend, considering knitting to this: our wide-ranging conversation with author Peggy Orenstein

Remember to enter this week’s giveaway by midnight Central time Sunday night. The winner will receive a copy of Peggy’s bestselling book, Unraveling: What I Learned About Life While Shearing Sheep, Dyeing Wool, and Making the World’s Ugliest Sweater.

If you’re new to MDK, come on in and look around. Every day of the year, we celebrate the knitting life, with top-drawer knitting content, supportive community, and a first-class shopping experience. Questions? Email us anytime at, and you’ll get a prompt response from a real live MDK person.

Stay healthy, take care of each other, and knit on.

Big Fun Continues

The Setesdal Hat knitalong has officially ended, but it’s always a good time to make this quick, fun hat from MDK Field Guide No. 23: Glow.

To make it easy, order a bundle of Rowan Norwegian Wool right here. Prefer a two-color version? Pick 1 skein each of 2 colors of Norwegian Wool, and you’re all set; just use one color for the background and the other color for the motifs. (See Nell’s 2-color version here.)

But Wait There’s More

Ready to cruise through another Arne & Carlos design together? Join us for the Great Dickie-along, now in progress. You’ll need 2 balls of Norwegian Wool in your main color, and 1 ball each of 3 contrasting shades. Looking for inspiration and support? You’ll find it right here in the MDK Lounge

Have a look at all the fun knitters are having, and get inspired! Post your progress in the Lounge or on Instagram with #moderndailyknitting and #arneandcarlos, and you’ll be eligible for awesome prizes.
