At the risk of turning into a latter-day Paul Revere, forever announcing what’s new from the Brits, I want to shout this from horseback: there’s a new season of Unforgotten! There’s a new season of Unforgotten!

And if your PBS streaming service is anything like mine, some of the six episodes are expiring much more quickly than they usually do. So get a wiggle on; Unforgotten is about a cold case, but it’s not going to stay on ice forever.

Confession: I binged all 6 episodes of Season 6 in one long, late evening of stitching. On a school night!

This is a really good one. While I would always like more Nicola Walker whenever possible, I am no longer tragically miffed that she left the series after Season 4. DCI Jessica James, played by Sinéad Keenanhas excellent awkward chemistry with Sanjeev Bhaskar’s stalwart, softspoken DI Sunny Khan.  Their working and personal relationship is the heart of the show, and it’s clicking now.

The way these procedural crime-solvers go, we begin by meeting a whole bunch of unrelated characters living complicated lives, and we pretend to ourselves that we don’t know why in the world we are peeping in on them.

In Season 6 of Unforgotten, the gaggle is fascinating and the parts are exceedingly well written and well acted.

In particular, I loved the on-edge and excellent Victoria Hamilton (aka Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother in The Crown) as the victim’s widow.

Each of the first five episodes ends with a well-crafted cliffhanger. And if you’re staying up until 2 a.m., you can jump off those cliffs immediately—one more row!

  • I just discovered this series and am on season 4. It has made for a great knitting companion.

  • Excellent production! And I completely agree with you about Victoria Hamilton. PBS is my favorite channel offering many more interesting programs than regularly scheduled TV.

    • Amen! Nobody does it better than PBS.

  • This series is so good. I just finished the second espisode of this season and might binge the rest today.

  • I just love when I see a “Knit to This” and know immediately it’s a recommendation from Kay. I actually play a little game when I get the e-mail notification “I bet this is from Kay!”. I will watch “Unforgotten” for two reasons- Kay recommended it and it stars Sanjeev Bhaskar. I have been tempted when it appears on my Masterpiece feed. I discovered Sanjeev on “Top Gear” https://youtu.be/JwqVYKyYwd8?si=7Tpr2aHeuNiSNgA5
(apologies if the link doesn’t work) and have watched his offerings on one of my favorite YouTube channels “Letters Live” https://youtu.be/pOQYtGBUsxE?si=WjXORo4PXykUbb80 (again, apologies). In both cases do a manual YouTube search!

I was looking for a new British series as I am about at the end of Ardal O’Hanlon’s stint on “Death in Paradise”.

This will be a very Kay-centric day as I am casting on a log cabin throw for travel knitting.

    Cheers!

    • If you’re going for the full Kay themed day you are still in your PJs! Thanks for the sweet words.

      • How did you know?!?!

  • Golly this newest season is good! I highly recommend it. After we finished Unforgotten, we watched Ballard, a new series on Netflix which is also about cold cases. The difference in quality was notable, particularly with the writing. British crime shows are the best!

    • Even minor characters have a full story, you have the feeling, even if they don’t tell the full story. No one is expendable or just a plot device/stock character. I think that’s one big difference. Plus the fact that everybody isn’t airbrushed. Miraculously people are still attractive when real!

      • “Airbrushed” — exactly!! I frequently notice this on British shows and just had the same reaction when watching the “Thursday Murder Club” where Helen Mirren could have been made up far more but looks like a real person.
Please support PBS at the local and national level folks!

  • Count me in, please!

  • Have loved the show and am still tragically miffed. But I love Sanjeev Bhaskar and did make it through Season 5; have to admit some empathy for the plight of New Girl. Will interrupt the new season of Baking Show. Thanks for the heads up!

  • I also binged the entire season on a school night (and I’m a teacher)…
I also enjoyed the series “The Marlow Murder Club” – intrigue and crime in a small town. And it features many incredibly intelligent women! Yay

  • BEST FREAKING SHOW EVER!!

    Whoop whoop!

I was so HAPPY to see “Unforgotten” return: It made me send more money to public media.

Folks… send some of those coffee dollars to PBS and NPR and make yourself a pour over or two at home.

Sanjeev Bhaskar… yes yes yes yes.

Beautiful man. Complex character… we humans are still worth it.

I need many reassurances these days…

Oh, my lord, does it EVER help my sanity right now: Gives me teeny emotional energy to actively hope for future livable future society in the U.S. …

    Peace and love power, folks

  • I love that you still refer to school nights! Some things never leave us. This series looks really good, I will try to find it here in Canada.

  • Though I, too, miss Nicola Walker – it’s great tv. I’d watch her in anything.

My Sunday night watching (and knitting) is Masterpiece w a side of John Oliver, though my summer Sundays were also ‘Gilded.’

However, I cringe in anticipation as to what they have done to the Forsythe Saga, and eagerly await our return to the Dales.

  • So glad the series is coming back it’s fantastic

  • I have only been give 2 episodes and it is so frustrating! I am a Britbox subscriber. Ugh.

  • We just finished this one. It’s so good!

A PBS passport is one of the best streaming deals out there, but if you don’t have it, there is usually a brief window on the PBS app to watch for free. It looks like episodes 1 and 2 are free right now. In our area, episode 3 is on the schedule for broadcast tonight (the old fashioned way, where you tune in at 10 pm).

  • Yay!!!!!! I LOVED Nicola Walker (and reeeeeeeeeaaalllly hope Annika comes back) but love this show and didn’t realize Season 6 was out!

  • I have the PBS Masterpiece subscription, but so far only three episodes are available. How are you getting 6?

    • I get the impression it’s highly localized to your local PBS station, even if you have Passport (the best streaming deal, plus it supports PBS).

  • Just finished episode 3. So good. But I miss Nicola!

    • We have to dance with the one that brought us Mary Lou! You start to love Jess, hang in there.

  • I love Sunny so much ❤️

    • Agree. I’m still laughing a week later at his story about online dating.

  • I loved this show from the beginning, but as a diehard Nicola fan I did let it drop off my radar. But Sanjeev Bhaskar is also worth my time. As far as not being airbrushed, this is one of my favorite things about British television that filmmakers overly focused on youth n beauty are missing out on: not everybody on camera needs to be drop dead gorgeous. Beautiful haunted eyes (Nicola) and interesting (rather than distractingly stunning) faces are more compelling, relatable, etc.

    • Miss Nicola Walker, but I’ll have try the new episodes without her.

  • Just found season 1 on prime.

  • I miss Nicola too, but I really like the chemistry with the two leads currently. “How far can you chuck a (redacted object)?” “I don’t know, 20-30 feet..”

I binged over two days, as my work background. Not when I was doing important things, just during the rather boring data processing bits.

  • I agree with everyone that this is a great show and that we should all support PBS!Perhaps you Masterpiece fans already knew this, but not too long ago I discovered that the red letters in the credits spell out something related to the episode. They roll pretty fast, but since I’m streaming it, I can stop and start to catch all the letters. Such fun! 🙂

  • I love this series too, we watch it on Britbox via our Amazon Prime subscription. But PBS needs our support! So we watch other things on PBS like Pompeii: The New Dig, fascinating!

  • Truly one of the best shows, ever. Thanks for the heads up on early departures – I haven’t started yet – it’s like when you buy some truly scrumptious yarn and keep waiting for just the right moment to use it – I keep passing it for something else, thinking it’s not just the right time for this favorite – Now, I’ll have to cast on a new project just for binging the show 😉
