Dear Kay,

I’ve been thinking a lot about gatherings, how I crave company these days, how my introvert tendencies are taking a back seat to the desire to be with other people. Turns out, I’m not the only one.

Kay, it really was one of those wish-you-were-here things, our first-ever Sunday afternoon knitting party at MDK World Headquarters in Nashville.

Hi y’all! And please note Pam Butler bottom left, alum owner of Angel Hair Yarn Co., who sold me my first ball of Rowan yarn back in 2002. O the memories.

Knitters from near and, yes, Hopkinsville, Kentucky (Marsha! So glad you made it!) gathered on a June afternoon, proving once again that knitters will knit in 98 percent humidity, no problem, as long as the AC holds up.

To be fair, there was more knitting of sweaters than wearing of sweaters.

Also: farmyard poultry.

I’ve forgotten what knitted chicken pattern this is (help me out in the comments!), but it’s a banger and I witnessed the affixing of the second little flappy wing, a knitterly triumph if there ever was one.

Snacks were snacked, ginger ale was quaffed, and a couple of brave souls dipped into the Refrigerator of Unusual Malt Beverages.

A Marsha-talks-to-Marsha moment.

The assigned pooling conversation got kind of intense.

Much love was expressed for Amy Christoffers’s Waffle Pullover, and mosaic knitting in general.

Looking breezy, friends. Thanks for coming!

(Our little shop is so cute these days. Hi Nia! Way to be iPad conversant.)

In all, it was all the things that knitters do when they’re together.

Our next Sunday Afternoon Knitting (And Crochet!) Party is coming up on Sunday, July 20, 2:00-5:00 pm. This one is going to be extraspecial because it will also be the Knit Stars Big Meetup, which we’re happy to host. Please let us know if you’re coming, here, so we can be sure to have enough Unusual Beverages And Snacks. It’s all free.

There’s something about a Sunday afternoon that feels slow and gentle and in a city like Nashville, possibly the least-bonkers traffic situation.

We are proud of our four gigantic air conditioning units. We will not let a heat wave get the best of us. Knitters gonna knit, crocheters gonna crochet.

Love,

Ann

PS Our virtual workshops and gatherings are happening all the time, seems like. If you’re in the MDK Society, we’ll be doing breakout rooms at the end of our next Snippets Show, our monthly Zoom for Society members. This month I’m really excited that Amanda Hesser will be joining us. Wednesday, July 16, noon Eastern. (If you’ve been meaning to join the MDK Society, please do! It’s a lot of fun.)

  • Ooh, I loved Angel Hair Yarn! ♥️

  • How fun! Thanks for sharing. These pictures are great and inspiring. I feel a trip planning project coming up in my near future!

  • Man I wish I lived close enough to join y’all.

    • Me, too, Laura!

  • How fun! I so wish you were in driving distance! Someday!

  • OK Ann Shayne,
Your mission (or ANY Eagle-eyed MDK reader who knows & wants to chime it) is to get me the name of the pattern for that FABULOUS green hand-knit T seen in the bottom left corner of photo #1 with repeat appearances in the Marsha/Marsha* meeting photo and also in the background of the last photo. It’s seamless (likely top down), with a delightful smallish lace yoke pattern & is knit is some wonderful slubby yarn that gives a great texture to the mostly stockinette body.

It is WONDERFUL & I WANT one (which means I need to make one for myself!)

    * Oh how I wish there was ONE MORE MARSHA so we could play with that iconic Brady Bunch line that continues echoing to this day!
    Repeat after me everybody:
    “Marsha Marsha MARSHA!”
    “Oh Jan!”

    • It’s Willa by This.Bird.Knits

  • Thank you for sharing the day! True, more knitting of than wearing…I spotted two short sleeve tops, a possibly knitted tank, and a clever knitted pendant. The MDK shop is cute! I’ll have a fizzy drink and chips while I knit, too. Love to all, bessie

  • So much fun and so many wonderful stories and ideas.

  • I wish I could be there! Alas, SC is too far to drive for an afternoon of knitting. Boohoo. Love the chicken. Our guild is doing a Kal of the emotional support chicken that we’re all going to donate to one of our charities. Never done one before but it a big thing. Stay cool TN!
