I’m late to this party, but happy to have arrived. Derry Girls is a hoot, it’s a scream, it’s warm and fuzzy and it gives me nostalgia for a time and place I did not experience: Northern Ireland in the 1990s.

Derry Girls has revived the sitcom for me. The laughs are real, and I wonder if it’s just a coincidence that it takes me back to Happy Days. As in that joyful series, the center of it all is a family, and a group of teenagers. Add in a Catholic girls school, the backdrop of the Troubles and the historic peace process, and much salty language, and you’ve got Derry Girls. What I love most is that girls are at the heart of it, in all their intelligence, beauty, and off-the-wall wildness.

All three seasons of Derry Girls are streaming on Netflix.

Once you’ve fallen in love with the cast, here’s another perfect Knit to This: the Derry Girls on The Great British Baking Show, also on Netflix.

  • So glad you found it! I love it as well and it really is a hoot!

  • I love this too!! So glad you like it as well. As one of 6 sisters of Irish heritage who attended Catholic school, I find it somehow relatable and it gives me lots of smiles.

  • I loved Derry Girls too, I slow rolled it bc I didn’t want it to end. And what a great end to the show.

You may said the magic words which entice me into finally watching The Great British Baking Show.

Have you seen Bonus Family, it’s a FANTASTIC Swedish show on Netflix. Bonus Family is their word for blended family, it’s not your stepfather, it’s your bonus dad, bonus brother, etc. It took me a few episodes to into it but now it’s my all-time favorite show because of how I feel at the conclusion of every episode. At first I liked no one since unlike US TV shows they are all flawed, kind of like non-imaginary people. Even the grandmothers aren’t reduced to one dimension, except by their children, tho not by their grand children. The perfect theme music is our bonus.

    • Yes, Bonus Family is great

  • The mind-blower for me regarding Derry Girls was when I realized that Nicola Coughlin who plays Clare Devlin on the show is also Penelope Featherington in Bridgerton. Can’t be the same person, right?? I spent a few episodes of Bridgerton muttering “Why do I feel like I know her?” I also love that James is admitted to the girls school. And Sister Mary Michael is wonderfully awful.

  • I enjoy Derry Girls but it’s hard for me to knit to a show with an accent that strains my ear balls. I’m getting better at it but it’s a challenge.

Another show I really loved was Offspring which is out of Australia. It’s about a physician named Nina and her very quirky family and navigating modern life. It may have already made “Knit to This”. Anyhow, it’s streaming on Hulu.

    • Suggestion: anytime a show is full of characters with an accent difficult to understand, use Subtitles! Makes it a lot more clear.

  • I love that show! It was hilarious, I was so sad when it was over. Hubby and I love all the British shows. In fact, the actor who plays James is in the crime show Beyond Paradise. And he just as funny/goofy in that.

  • What a great recommendation! I’ve watched it with my teenagers several times now, all the way through, and we sometimes put one on if someone needs cheered up. Their appearance on the bake off was my all time favourite episode.

  • I LOVE this show! We have watched it through twice. 13 years of Catholic School in my Irish American Catholic community primed me. However, my brother-in-law, who was raised in Texas by non-religous WASPS love it as well. So happy you are enjoying it!

  • I have watched it, and really enjoyed it. I didn’t know about them being in a baking show, so I’ll have to check it out. One of the girls is also a major character in the Brigerton series.

  • I loved this show! And the series finale was soo touching (even if the actors were a bit old for the roles by then), but watching the characters change and mature was wonderful.

    A great finale.

    Great viewing!

  • Definitely an all-time favorite… and they were hilarious on the GBB show. It’s been a while so I may have to watch it again now!

  • We watched this years ago and loved it! If you grew up Catholic, with immigrant parents (not Irish), you’ll absolutely relate to the family dynamics and attitudes toward religion. It’s spot-on with my childhood and my husband’s.

  • OMG how great is Sister Michael, she of the holy eyeroll! Great show.
Another good one is Moone Boy with Chris O’Dowd. BritBox has it.

  • I love this suggestion. One of my best friends is Irish. And we both are catholic and have a lot in common with the Derry Girls
    We will enjoy this series

  • My sister turned me on to this. My husband and I have been watching the Giro d’Italia and one of the commentators is a retired Irish cyclist. Sounds just like Uncle Colm.

    • The commentator is probably Sean Kelly, one of the greats of cycling. A lovely man altogether!

  • Why did I stop getting hard copy of the field guide? If I need to do something so that they’ll strat comin again, please let me know.

  • I had not watched this series but started watching this week on your recommendation! And since I’m a fan of the British Baking show I can’t wait to watch it w the Derry girls next!
Has anyone watched CBS Elsbeth? She wears FUN crochet & knits on many scenes! And the mystery is good too!

  • My favorite sitcom EVER!!! It so captures the feel of a “Catholic” school regardless of what country it is located in. Laugh until you cry, then cry again once it’s over.

  • Derry Girls is a fave! Louisa Clare Harland, who plays Orla on Derry Girls, is the lead in Sally Wainwright’s new show Renegade Nell.
