Dear Kay,

My new pen pal at Jade Sapphire Exotic Fibres, Jane Saffir, just sent along a list of patterns that Sylph fans have enjoyed.

(For those just tuning in, Sylph is the cashmere/linen yarn that we just brought into the Shop. We are obsessing about patterns for Sylph the way a mom thinks about what college her son should attend. What. Are. The. Options. I. NEED. OPTIONS.)

The right pattern/right yarn question is one of the core puzzles in every knitter’s life. When working with a fancy yarn like Sylph, you want to be sure you’re going to end up with something dreamy and special. In situations like this, I tend to aim for simple rather than complex. The yarn is so special that I don’t look to the pattern for drama. There’s enough drama in I Have This Beautiful Yarn.

So when I get a new list of patterns to consider from a woman whose job is to make exotic yarns, I’m all eyes. It’s like The Fiske Guide to Colleges, only for knitting.

These are all lovely. Thank you, Jane, for the ideas.

Lake Calhoun Wrap by DrawFourDesigns

Kay is currently ruching her head off with her Sylph version of Citron Grand. For those of us who have already done a Citron Grand, the Lake Calhoun Wrap provides soul-satisfying, low-dose ruching. This is is really speaking to me—it has long sections of stockinette broken up by bands of cables.

2 skeins of Sylph in 1 color. This is rustle, available in the shop.

Silent Forest Tank by Mari Tobita

This light little shell, Silent Forest Tank, is a beautiful thing.

Uses 2 to 4 skeins of Sylph in 1 color. This is Skinny Jeans, available in the Shop.

Aisé by Espace Tricot

I have made more than one stockinette wrap in my life, and I have always enjoyed it—because in both cases, I was working with yarn I was nuts about. Espace Tricot’s Aisé will indeed be easy, as its name implies. But it will also have tremendous drape and lightness. I crave this piece as one of those forever handknits to treasure.

uses 3 skeins. We have 16 shades that would all look delicious for aisé.

Monier’s Flowerpot by Shaina Bilow

The subtle trick here is that the ends of this scarf are reverse stockinette, while the long side panels are stockinette. Keeping us on our toes.
CALLS FOR 3 skeins of Sylph, 1 of each color. color options abound in the shop.

Meanwhile, in Ann’s Kitchen

Back at Stately Shayne Manor, in my own Sylph odyssey, I’m about 20 rows from finishing this Torquata Wrap by Ambah O’Brien.
I’m sorry I can’t fix a cup of coffee for you so we can sit down and flap this thing around. It is really something.
I’ve abandoned all other knitting for this.
Triberrytops, Tanis Grays, Extinction, Skinny Jeans (top right corner)

Love to everyone, and I mean L.O.V.E. I’m writing this but just feeling heartbroken about the events in Las Vegas.

  • Oooh oooh oooh. They’re all so pretty, all so Sylph-ish.
While it’s no help in the larger situation, I hope everyone’s aching hearts are soothed by their knitting.

  • Knitting does help to soothe one’s spirit. Here in Ontario, I am heartbroken too.

  • Oh dear. Sylph is even more beautiful than I remember it being. Ann, that wrap is fabulous.
As our beloved Elizabeth Zimmermann has often been quoted, “…knitting soothes the troubled spirit…”
    Love to all.

  • LOVE the pattern ideas and look forward to knitting at least one of them with Sylph. xo

  • The Torquata wrap is just luscious.

The Silent Forest Tank is very pretty. I wonder how warm that lacy top is with cashmere a warm fiber and linen a cool fiber.

  • Will you get the blue version of the easel sweater kit in the future?

  • I love your Torquata Wrap and thank you especially for that close-up.

  • I’d love to try the Sylph, but since it’s pricey, I’d like to try something that calls for one skein. Any ideas?

  • I am making the Mohair Bias Loop by Churchmouse — it should be great out of this yarn, and only a little over one skein.

  • Wondering if y’all think Milo would work knitted in Sylph? Would love your thoughts!!
