Dear Ann,

We’ve had so much going on around here, what with this and that and that other thing, that I haven’t had a second to put in a word for a few new books of excitement in our world. Saturday seems like a fine time.

So here’s my short list: four new books, three about knitting and one out of left field.

If there are new books for knitters that you like, shout them out! I’m always happy to spread the word on new books.

At the Spinnery

The Green Mountain Spinnery in Putney, Vermont has been a source of good things for knitters for as long as most of us have been knitting.

They’ve got a new book out, At the Spinnery, produced by the team at One More Row Press. It’s full of talented friends that you and I have met through knitting: designers Kathleen Dames, Angela Tong, and Amy Herzog, photographer Gale Zucker, and model Ariana McLean, who was assistant photographer on one of our own books a few years back.

It’s a great collection of casual garments using the Spinnery’s distinctive, authentic yarns.

You can get the ebook on Ravelry, or a print copy from The Green Mountain Spinnery.

But wait, there’s more!

For the Ravelry ebook edition, One More Row Press is offering a $5.00 discount to MDK readers: just enter the code MDKSPINNERY at checkout, now through March 31, 2019.

Seamless Knit Sweaters in 2 Weeks

Just in time for knitters who thought banging out a sweater in 28 days was too slow a pace. Marie Greene, aka Olive Knits, has a brand-new collection of 20 sweaters, all using seamless construction, that a monogamous knitter can whip out in a matter of days. The style: breezy basics, with lots of variation in the details. The vibe: nautical and natural. A fantastic book for a first-time sweater knitter.

Knitting Modular: Shawls, Wraps, and Stoles

So glad I didn’t miss this gem in the holiday rush. Melissa Leapman creates books to delight and sustain the knitter who loves to customize. This one explores modular construction of shawls, wraps, and stoles, just like it says on the cover. An incredible trove of 185 stitch patterns, presented in the form of wedges, borders (lower and perpendicular), and mysterious “insertions,” plus tutorials that turn the book into a master class on shawls.

Dreyer’s English: An Utterly Correct Guide to Clarity and Style

I’m proud to say that my copy doesn’t say “New York Times Bestseller” on the cover, because it’s a first edition. I’ve been following Benjamin Dreyer on Twitter for years, and #CopyEditorProTip has been a source of clarity, guidance and laughs for me. I’m thrilled to be able to repay a little of that free help by buying and recommending the book. He’s fun to read, so the medicine goes down easily. I think this book will be around forever. It’s already in its third printing.

And because this is Saturday, and you might be looking for a Knit to This, here’s the New York Times Book Review podcast episode featuring Benjamin Dreyer talking about the book.

Love,

Kay

  • It pleases me that a book on writing and the English language is a best seller. Now to get one of my own. (I was going to put an exclamation mark there, but thought I might be judged, given the context.)

  • ooh! Thanks for the heads-up. I think all three may join my library!

  • I’ve been meaning to send you this…

I wasn’t sure if you knew of all of these!

  • thanks, kay! have these on hold for me at the library now. appreciate the tip!

  • Love Green Mtn Spinnery! Extremely welcoming to look around and ask questions and if u get there before 2pm they probably give u a little tour! Last year signed up for a great retreat with Ms. K. Atherly and I gained so much along with meeting fabulous people and the food was outstanding! Thanks Moreen!!!! ❤️

  • OK, I’m confused. You mention “At the Spinnery,” but there is no photo of the book… on the other hand, there is a photo of “Painting with Wool,” but you don’t mention it!
    ???

    • My copy of At the Spinnery is digital, and as I wrote the post I realized that Painting With Wool has not yet reached its publication date, so I’m saving it for next time (it’s about needle-felting and it’s beautiful).

      • Phew! Thank you for clarifying re: Painting With Wool. However, your intriguing omission sent me on a search for it, and it does look fascinating! Thanks for the pre-pub alert!

        • I definitely recommend giving Dani Ives a follow on Instagram (and via mailing list). Her work is breathtaking!!

    • I too was just about to ask about Painting with Wool, because that’s an intriguing title. I already got At the Spinnery— slim but packed with great patterns. 🙂

  • Tx! He also had a good interview with Terry Gross on Fresh Air (you can hear it via the podcast).

  • Thank you for the shout out for At the Spinnery–it really is full of excellent patterns. xox

  • Already have my Dreyer in hand and semi-Post-it-noted (but I haven’t read it all yet). I’m swooning over the beautiful model on At the Spinnery. Those eyes! If I knit that shawl will I look like Ariana? she says only half-joking. Off to look at the ebook on Rav.
