  • A Tomato! I have eaten so many my blood type is marinara.

  • Carrot! As a baby my nose turned orange from too many – wonder if I can still do that?

  • I would be a patty pan squash.

    • I would be a chanterelle mushroom. Although mushrooms are classified as vegetables, (technically) they are so much more! What fun to be a plant that is part of the kingdom called fungi! I relate to chanterelles because they are popular, they are wild and they are generally delicious. Many are orange, yellow or white (great color way) Chanterelles are meaty- I can relate! and funnel-shaped. Underneath the smooth cap, most species have rounded, folds- yup. Got those too!

  • Right now…asparagus ~ tall and thin.

  • So many great answers here – I’ll take green pepper, or yellow or orange!

  • Edamame- so worth getting past the outer shell!

  • The beet, the beat of my heart, the red blood it bleeds when I cut it. The beet, the beet, the beet, I feel the beet, I draw the beet.

  • Green leafy lettuce

  • Artichoke

  • A potato.

  • A red pepper.

  • Cabbage

  • Perpetual Beet Spinach – resilient!!

  • Fresh ginger!!!!

  • I love this peep into your sketch book! And the onion sketch is fantastic…but entirely next-level with caption of Self Portrait. I have no idea what vegetable to suggest for myself. Maybe an artichoke…always wanting to let it keep flourishing and doing its thing because the next stage might get better and better. (Somewhere, someone is saying “are you Enneagram 7?”) Or purple sprouting broccoli. It’s tall, lanky, late today the party, you question if it’s doing anything, and then it’s suddenly showing out. And you can eat the stalks, the leaves, the broccoli. Or you can let it bloom and feed the bees. This is no long er anything to do with me…just a note that you should grow Purple Sprouting Broccoli.

  • The carrot!

  • Celery: Cool, lean, crowned and adorned

  • Maybe I’m a mushroom because I love the forest.

  • Celery… not well represented here, it was feeling left out but has so much to offer. Goes well with many things and a standout alone. Sweeter when you get closer to the heart.

  • Golden Beet- those beautiful colors and greens!

  • I can see myself as a tomato

  • I think a tomato- get me at the wrong time and I’m tart and bitter, but if you get the timing right, I can be quite sweet…

  • Butternut squash- kind of my shape. Perhaps too much time sitting knitting!

  • One of the two seasonal vegetables I make my family eat till they’re gone, sweet corn – preferably fresh on the cob in late august. (The other is asparagus).

  • I’d be a hybrid…a cross between broccoli for my hair and eggplant for my shape.

  • A pepper – sometimes green, sometimes yellow or red or orange. And sometime spicy, depending on what else is happening!

  • Artichoke, can be prickly but really nice on the inside.

  • Kale. Surprisingly good in lots of different situations, and keeps coming back no matter how hard you try to get rid of it.

  • Potato. Why? I don’t know, I just like them cooked any which way you can!

  • I think a cabage head. I once painted myself with a bunch of ripe tomatoes, but that was when I was young. Once upon a time…..

  • A radish

  • I’m feeling like an eggplant today …

  • First, the sketches are amazing! I love the notions bag—get that to spoon flower and you have a new product.

Vegetable?? Maybe an artichoke. Thick skin, soft heart, can be prickly at times!

  • A little Thai eggplant. Small and flamboyant, bursting with flavor!

  • Home grown tomato

  • A mushroom. Technically a fungus so not sure I count as a vegetable. I range from simple to exotic, earthy to poisonous.

  • How about one of those endearingly ugly misshapen organic carrots? Loads of personality; generator of curiosity and imagination, with all the good taste and crunch you could ask for.

  • Cilantro, of course! It may not be a vegetable and it is definitely an acquired taste. Love it or hate it, it is unforgettable. Just like me!!!

  • If I were to sketch myself as a vegetable it would be a brussel sprout with a big smile on it!

  • A potato…
    A potato with arms…
A potato with arms on the couch….with knitting needles!

  • An acorn squash…round and full of squishy stuff

  • I’d say artichoke but will go with frisée, just because no one else said it,

  • Spaghetti squash because how I appear on the outside vs what’s useful about me on the inside would be a surprise!

  • Here we are ,is it A fruit or vegetable?
    I must be an avocado.

  • Lotus root for me. Beautiful blossoms above the water and the root is tasty as a side or a sweet

  • Garlic. Pretty much goes with everything.

  • After looking at my hair in the mirror this morning,I would have to be a carrot.

  • My self portrait would be a beet! Love red.

  • Cabbage-red or green. Served hot or crispy cold. And complimentary colors.

  • I’d be corn. Corn infected with huitlacoche that is. Incredibly delicious!

    Love the sketches!

  • A Morel

  • I would definitely have to say garlic. I add spice to most situations but can turn sharp enough to clear a room if angered.

  • Butternut squash!

  • Artichoke, I’m a little prickly

  • I’d bean aubergine!

  • Eggplant

  • sweet potato

  • An artichoke because of its many layers and I love that my plant produces year after year.

  • I would be fennel. Fennel living in Italy. I have only recently discovered it.

  • Tomato. Because whether I am a vegetable or a fruit, I am delicious, versatile, and occasionally controversial.

  • A rutabaga- mostly cuz I think the word is funny.

  • Ooh la la, love this week’s prize! I would be a cauliflower, because I eat so much of it.

  • Escarole

  • I would be a sweet potato…. Earthly and plain on the outside, but bright, beautiful, sweet and tasty on the inside.

  • I would be an artichoke. Prickly on the outside, multilayered with a soft center.

  • A tomato . I’d be a tomato. It can be cool and refreshing, warm and spicy, saucy and sassy.

  • An eggplant. Just a regular one. I aspire to be a Japanese eggplant. Trimmer shaped.

  • I think one of those pretty purple & white eggplants. I don’t even like eggplants, but I think that would be pretty!

  • I would most definitely be asparagus

  • I’d sketch myself as an artichoke….they are hard to get to know but once you do, we are delicious!

  • Eggplant. That is my body shape.

  • I would be a rhubarb stalk. You either hate them or love them and it’s usually an acquired taste. Like me!

  • If I were to sketch myself as a vegetable, it would have to be as an avocado. I know many call an avocado a fruit, but I view it as a vegetable because it is not sweet as all fruits are. And I am shaped like an avocado! It’s my favorite!!

  • I can’t think of a specific vegetable. But, I think it would be one that is tough and difficult to eradicate.

  • Onion. Lots of layers and useful.

  • I would be asparagus—seasonal, therefore special, tall and slender, delicious anytime, and beautifully green.

  • A sweet potatoe, knobby and rough on the outside but sweet in the center!

  • A potato. You can dress me up or down and take me anywhere.

  • Celery- tall and proud with a cute hair-do on top

  • An onion – I have many layers and never seem to get to the core, I can add interest, but can also give you heartburn…;)

  • An eggplant. Yup, same shape and often dressed in shades of purple.

  • If I were to sketch myself as a vegetable from my garden, I think I’d be a parsnip. Sturdy, pale, sensitive, and takes a long time to grow.

  • An Artichoke—it was the first vegetable that came to mind! I can be a mystery to some, but if you are willing to go for the good stuff and peel the leaves away, you may be surprised. And best of all–drench me in garlic butter and I will be your friend for life!

  • I’d say I’m a carrot – dependable, easy to grow, likeable, good for improving your (in) sight.

  • Brussels sprout.

  • Carrot. I’m deeper and sweeter than people realize, and have an attractive topside.

  • I think I would be an asparagus because I was tall and super skinny as a teenager. Still tall, not quite as skinny now!

  • A tomato. Have you seen my hair?

So I know a tomato is technically a fruit, not really a vegetable. I am technically some-other-color hair, not really a redhead. But it’s been 40 years since I became a not-really-a-redhead so we’ll go with that.

  • A big ripe red luscious tomato!!

  • Cabbage, because it ages well!

  • A tomato because it’s technically a fruit but used as a vegetable and tastes like a vegetable. I’m often misunderstood; like I’m not what I appear to be? Also, tomatoes are what holds so many dishes together, especially tomato sauce!!

  • I would be asparagus! Tall and slender

  • A pomegranate….with many seeds to sow

  • A sprouting bean, greeting the sky.

  • a beet, love em and I blush easily

  • A lemon

  • Tomato

  • Aubergine. AKA Eggplant. Something about the color.

  • Me? I’d be a big fat sun-ripened tomato growing in my own backyard.

  • A sweet potato. It’s a versatile vegetable that can be cooked in so many different ways.

  • Asparagus- tall and thin… except I’m not…

  • Wow! What an intriguing question. Probably a potato. I’m Irish!

  • I, definitely, would be asparagus. Asparagus is seasonal and therefore special, like me. It is tall and slender, like me. And it is utterly delicious, like me???

  • Basil: savory, bright, deep. fresh & really good company

  • Swiss chard, to honor my ancestral family

  • Celery. I am kind of lanky and my hair is a little wild like the scraggly leaves at the top of a stalk.

  • I would be a beet. Sweet sometimes, sour other times.

  • Definitely broccoli, it’s beautiful and delicious!

  • Arugula….. spicy, peppery & healthy!

  • Fruits are so much easier to come up with than vegetables. But I think if I were to sketch myself as a vegetable it would have to be a head of red leaf lettuce. Lots of layers and colors.

  • Hi Hannah, Your sketches are very cool. I would never have thought to sketch a ketchup packet! LOL

I would probably sketch myself as an asparagus spear or a tomato. Both of these I grow in my garden.Nothing better than a tomato fresh from the garden!!! Plus I have auburn hair. So I’d be a tomato with wavy hair and glasses.

I’m certainly not slender so I’d be a nice thumb which asparagus spear. The top would be my hair pinned up with a clip and curling up over the top of my head as I wear it sometimes.

This was a fun thing to think about!!!

  • A BEET–that wonderful color and concentric rings!!

  • Hmmm. A parsnip. Yep, definitely a parsnip

  • Peapod

  • I’d have to say Eggplant… mostly because when I had my wisdom teeth removed close to if not more than 40 years ago, my mother lovingly called me eggplant face because of the swelling and bruising. And… I’ve never let her live it down – even now that she’s 85!

  • Me as a vegetable…? Cucumber!
    Clean, refreshing, crunchy!

  • I would be Little Gem lettuce because…I’m little too!

  • Goldie looks a darling. I would be a peanut plant! They aren’t common in the gardens of southwestern Ontario where there was snow on the ground this morning, but it is possible to grow them here. And I want to try!

  • Broccoli!

  • If I were to be sketched as a vegetable, I’d chose Brussels sprouts because the love them. But I’d want it to be the little purple ones, they’re the best!

  • I would be a potato. When was in college, the neighbor across the street from my parents was shaped not unlike a potato. With toothpick-size legs. In private we (our family) referred to her as The Potato Lady. I’m potato-shaped, too — somewhat irregular — but my legs are more in propotion to my potato-ness (but relatively shapely).

  • Asparagus. Crisp, lean, green and mean/

  • An artichoke… the answer is always an artichoke.

  • I would be an apple….
“an apple a day keeps the doctor away”

  • I would be a beet. My favorite color❤️

  • A shallot. Lots of layers, but not so pungent as an onion.

  • An upside-down leek.

  • Asparagus dressed up as potato.

  • Eggplant.

  • I’m a scallion, good with everything.

  • Lately I’ve been having a bit of trouble with recall so I’d draw a head of red cabbage sliced in two. Easy to look in to figure out what’s going on in there! 😉

  • Something to look forward to every summer, fresh corn on the cob! We eat it all summer and also take it off the cob to freeze for winter.

  • Onion. Sometimes sweet, sometimes complex, sometimes too strong. Make some cry, others love the taste.

  • I am definitely an artichoke.

  • Sweet red pepper

  • Asparagus because I am tall and I was
    thin when I was younger

  • I would be a potato of unusual conformation.

  • The first thing that came to mind was broccoli… Must be the curly hair 🙂

  • If I were (able) to sketch myself as a vegetable, it would be a radish.

  • Cucumber! Tall, slender, (manifesting – lol) cooling, a bit crispy -and with beautiful yellow blossoms.

  • I guess I would go with brussel spouts… a little bit odd, but very good with the right treatment and additions.

  • Definitely a Brandywine tomato. Name me something better to eat right out of the garden on a hot summer day, I dares you.

    • Sungold cherry tomatoes! Gardener’s treat – like candy when perfectly ripe. But I love brandywine tomatoes, too. Best kind for a great BLT!

  • My kids tell me either a carrot, spinach, or garlic, but I’ve been feeling very round lately, more like a gourd.

  • Definitely Rhubarb. Colorful, frilly leaves, a little sour but add a little sugar and it’s delicious.

  • Spinach!

  • Eggplant…round in the middle and always purple with rage.

  • Most definitely I would like to be …. a leek. So many ways to feed the world!

  • Spinach – I’m strong, “Cause I eats me spinach.”

  • An artichoke with a really big heart!

  • Kale. Less popular, but very good for you.

  • Kale. Because it’s good for you.

  • An eggplant because I LOVE the colour, but I would use the French term of Aubergine because it sounds exotic!

  • Hmm… Me as a vegetable? Corn on the cob, with a fetching head of corn-silk hair.

  • Well if I have to be accurate, I would have to sketch myself as a bell pepper, a bit short and rather round in the middle. But maybe I can use my imagination and sketch some celery, pretending to have long legs and fun frilly hair!

  • I think it would be a squash. Yellow or green, maybe crookneck. Mostly because the older I get, the bigger I get…..

  • A sweet potato, who doesn’t love a sweet potato pie, sweet potato fries, and my sweet potato casserole, yum!

  • My vegetable would be a carrot – I like to think I have long sturdy roots, and some fluffy greenery. ; )

  • I’d be an onion – lots of layers!

  • I would be a broccoli.

  • I see myself as broccoli because I have curly hair. (or cauliflower!)

  • Curly Kale for the versatility and color

  • Arugula – tender and spicy! And I think it could be the name of a dance 🙂

  • A spicy pepper

  • Romanesco….or as a friend calls it “fractal broccoli”. It’s unique, has that awesome fractal pattern and it’s a veg people will try-and like-even though they don’t like broccoli.

  • I’m a lonely little petunia in an onion patch!

  • As a vegetable I would be an artichoke. Lovely green colour, prickly on the outside, but so worth peeling away the layers to discover the special heart hidden within.

  • Turnip

  • eggplant

  • A lovely red pepper.

  • Onion…the base for every Jewish dish

  • I’m thinking Aubergine; the colors, the curves.

  • Definitely a red beet!

  • A mushroom.

Having a rough time at work.

  • I’d be rhubarb. A vegetable best enjoyed as a fruit, but also with poisonous parts! (Not really )

  • aubergine

  • Well, I’m tall, so it would have to be a good-sized leek.

  • An Onion, many layers.

  • Me as a vegetable? I want to be asparagus — tall and thin! It’s the way I will ever be that way!

  • Artichoke, because of my curly hair.

  • Honestly, a potato. Round, brown, and eminently adaptable.

  • Celery with the leaves at the top for lovely “hair” lol

  • Rhubarb – it’s both sweet and sour – like me lol

  • Fennel. Layers like an onion, but (hopefully) less sharp.

  • This was surprisingly difficult for me. 🙂 I would be a rutabaga, because it is a great name and they last the winter. We called them turnips, I found out the difference only recently.

  • Broccoli!

  • A snow pea. Crisp and snappy.

  • Cabbage: layered, cold-hardy, kinda sweet, kinda bitter.

  • Garlic

  • a potato – for its versatility

  • I’m broccoli. You should see my hair when I wake up in the morning!

  • parsnip- nothing special on the outside, lots of nooks for garden dirt, a bit peppery on the inside. Love to be in the stew!

  • I think it would be… Celery!

    • An onion…woman of many layers for sure!

  • Winter squash like a butternut or what a friend once gave me, a cow pumpkin, which was grown to feed cows in the winter. Lucky cows because the large tan pumpkins are just wonderful. Butternuts and other winter squashes might not look sexy but they are easy keepers and are great in sweet or savory recipes. Love the solid, easy to grow, beautiful rich orange color and they make great pumpkin pie or sweet baked goodies as well as wonderful soups and savory side dishes. I am solid, sweet and savory but not sure about being orange inside!

  • Hatch green chile. It goes with everything.

  • Zucchini for sure. I’d do something with the blossoms for hair!

  • I think I’m already a scallion

  • Celery, crisp and delicious with a full, leafy top.
Thanks so much for the wonderful sketches!

  • Plum tomato

  • A sweet potato. For sure.

  • Definitely. A Purple pepper

  • Probably a Romanesco. It doesn’t necessarily resemble me, but it’s odd, it’s quirky, and it looks like it’s made of little fir trees, so who can resist that?

  • Sweet potato! My dad always called me that. I miss him.

  • I am already half eggplant as I eat so much of it. So, eggplant, wonderfully round…

  • Butternut squash. It seems the most human vegetable.

  • A zucchini for sure!

  • I think I’d be baby bok choy . Small, crunchy and delicious.

  • Celeriac! Feeds a crowd, gnarly, complicated roots

  • For some reason onion popped into my brain immediately. My grandmother used to sing about a lonely petunia in an onion patch. No idea why I’m making that connection but see it reversed. Lonely onion in petunia patch.

  • Spaghetti squash…..2 of them. Cooked. One with the innards of the other hanging from the top 😉

  • rhubarb, for sure. i seem like one thing but i’m really another. i have red hair and a v. green spirit! also, i’m rather tart on my own, but mix me with some sugar and i sweeten right up!

  • An onion because all good things begin with an onion. (I’ve forgotten the Yiddish for this adage.)

  • Parsnip

  • Kale: a little bitter, well intentioned, steady

  • I asked my sleeping husband the question and he said, “I don’t know, something vibrant. Maybe a tomato because it’s full of surprises.” I asked him what surprises and he said, “Well for one, it’s a fruit.” He won’t remember this conversation in the morning.

  • Arugula!

  • I would be a root vegetable-probably a carrot!

  • A carrot, mostly because I love orange!

  • A french green bean.

  • Cauliflower!

  • A cucumber. These comments are wonderful!

  • If I were a vegetable it would be KALE!! Frilly around the edges, but full of important stuff.

  • An eggplant! (I love purple in all its variations, and I’m kinda that shape lol)

  • mmmm. well, I think I’m more of a fruitish being. I image myself to be a pink, luscious grapefruit, round, sumptuous, sunny. On the inside all moist with little pods of goodness that pop open in delight with a little tang mixed in with that wonderful sweet citrus of the grapefruit. Thanks. this was fun thing to do. jeanne

  • Artichoke, because they are funny

  • Asparagus!

  • A golden potato. Lot’s of creative ways to use them. Delicious au gratin! Who says that you can’t have as many craft choices either? Knitting, crochet, pottery, glass, fiber …….

  • Me as a veggie would be a sweet potato! Because I can be sweet or salty!

  • Red cabbage. A bit spicy. Crunchy, lots of layers. One of my favorite vegetables to grow. The outer leaves are amazing. I feel that way when I wear something I have created.

  • A tomato as I wake up bursting to start each day

  • Hahaha. Sweet potato! A little lumpy here and there and not always pretty on the outside, but inside all warm and sweet.

  • If I were to sketch myself as a vegetable, it would be an artichoke; a little prickly but with hidden depths of good stuff. And I already have a sketch somewhere (maybe) that I did in a scientific illustration class 50 years ago, so I’m experienced. And it would be an excuse to buy a couple of artichokes and serve them for dinner, with lots of butter. It’s all about the butter.

  • Sketch myself as a vegetable? An eggplant. Deep purple, bottom-heavy.

  • A radish

  • A snap pea, love the crunch!

  • An onion. I have many layers

  • Rainbow Chard 🙂

  • Celery -. Crunchy & leafy both

  • A carrot, bright yet down to earth and really quite sweet in the end

  • I’m kinda shaped like an eggplant…so, eggplant. And I like purple.

  • I might just be a hybrid vegetable. My hair is completely unmanageable and behaves like new corn silk, going off in all directions and blowing about, willy nilly. The rest of me is like an over-ripe pea pod, swollen but still nicely rounded. I might also be able to relate to one of those orange crook neck squash but would still require the wild corn hair!

  • I’d be a ginger root, branching off in all directions!

  • Celery-

  • An onion…sometimes I’m sweet, sometimes I make you cry.

  • A sweet potato.

  • Pumpkin, I love all the different colors and shapes of pumpkins.

  • If I were to sketch my self portrait as a vegetable, I would be a Brussels sprout.

  • I would be a brussel sprout stalk. I spent 38 years teaching school and I love children. The individual sprouts remind me of the children I taught, and the green color of the vegetable means growth and life to me. The individual sprouts are part of the stalk until it is time for them to go off on their own.

  • An onion. So many layers. And I will make you laugh until you cry!

  • No idea what vegetable I’d be. I’m tempted to say a vegetable I really enjoy eating or something really unique and fun. However, I’d probably be something less sexy, like corn, which is quite versatile and is very tasty, so there’s that.
