Dear Ann,

I’m a rule breaker, a dream maker, a love taker—don’t you mess around with me! (Apologies to Pat Benatar, who probably wasn’t talking about knitting.)  I seem to do things in my own time, and always a bit out of order.

In other words, I started my own Swarf before our Swarfalong, a two-week flash knitalong that kicks off tomorrow. The moment my yarn arrived, I just couldn’t wait.

Thanks to a December weekend that contained two three-hour train rides, I made it nearly all the way to the part where you join up the front and back, shape the yoke, and make the neck. I’m in the home stretch.

What stopped me?  Two things:

  1. I needed to locate a second circular needle in the correct size, so I could knit the yoke and neck in the round on two circulars. I’m like a knitting Roomba: I go until I hit an obstacle. A missing needle has left more than one project sitting with the dust bunnies for a while.
  2. Falling into Cara Davis’s temperature blanket rabbit hole. Thank you, everybody who is free-falling with me!  Isn’t it fun? I’ll show you progress on my own temperature blankets soon. (Yes, there are two of them. I gotta be me.) And please stay tuned while we replenish our Felted Tweed shelves; you shopped them hard, and we appreciate it.

Here Be Swarf

This is knitting so fast, easy, and enjoyable that the only tip I’ve got is: enjoy the ride.

The yarn is Tynd by Woolfolk. My colors A, B, C, D, and E are one skein each of 12, 17, 19, 32 AND 33. check out our fast-moving swarf bundles, which do the color picking for you, at a savings.

Given the cold snap here, I am going to hurry up and finish this.

Once I locate that damn needle.

P.S. I have enough leftovers for a wee canine version that I will surely call Swoof.  Don’t @ me.

  • A joker, a smoker, a midnight toker…

    • Not to mention a picker/grinner/lover/sinner.

    • And I get my lovin on the run

  • Swoof! I love it!! Swarf is looking beautiful in those blues.

    • For Marl Table for Searf what do you mean by 16(32,32) and 16(16,32)?

      • There are three sizes of the Swarf, which vary in length only. The numbers in parentheses are for the second and third sizes.

  • Knitting Roomba! Kate, we love you, you’re a brilliant writer! How the hunt for needles has vexed us all.

I can’t wait to see Olive’s wee swoof.

  • Those blues are so moody and beautiful – perfect for the hibernation state that is Jan and Feb. Swoof! I may make one for my cat – a switty? The name for it needs further work.

    • Or a Swurr. For keeping a cat’s purr box warm….

    • maybe a Sweow?

  • Love, love, love the colors!!!

  • Love the colors. Love the texture.

Love this pattern for the combined effect of color and texture. This would be interesting even in just a solid color. So would several of the other patterns in the field guide. The scarf has a lovely texture. The blanket could have an interesting minimalist look.

    • I love, love, love the colors! I don’t NEED a swarf, I WANT to make a swarf!

  • Seeing the BLUE did me in ❤️

  • Heart breakeeeeeeer!

  • Hi Kay! Do you have a photo of a Swarf knit with the light color way? I’d love to see it!

    • Yes! I believe Elizabeth posted it in the marlalong thread in the MDK lounge. We liked it so much we nicked her colorway!

  • But were you runnin’ down the road tryin’ to loosen your load with 7 marls on your mind?

    • Always, when not standing on a corner in Winslow Arizona.

      • Fun fact: on a family cross country vacation, we drove past the exit for Winslow and my husband looked at me and asked, “Should we go stand on a corner?” It was like catching a glimpse of Santa’s boot as he exits up the chimney, or the Easter Bunny’s cotton tail as he hops to the neighbor’s — it really DOES exist!

  • Swarf dreams are made of this. Who am I to disagree? I’ve traveled the world and the seven seas. Everybody’s looking for circulars….

  • I’m just so envious of anyone that has so many hours in a day to knit!

  • Dang, please find a reason to use a Jimmy Dale Gilmore lyric. “You’re just the wave, not the water” would be a good start. Meanwhile, marl marl marl my boat….

  • Ummm Kay, how did you not name it SwArf???

  • Please post your swoof for all us furmoms!!

  • Just popping by from Team Dickie, where we don’t mess with newfangled renames however we greatly admire deployment of song lyrics. And also love this knit! xoxox

  • How convenient that my copy of Field Guide 19 arrived yesterday! I am so IN for this KAL, it almost hurts — especially because I won’t be able to cast on during the Zoom, but I intend to attend!
Question: in the Finishing section of Swarf, the last sentence — huh?? I think there may be a word or at least some letters missing.

  • So the back is made up of 2X2 ribbing entirely?
