Dear everybody,

It’s a rough old Thanksgiving this year. We hope you all are safe and that you can bear the hard decisions and sacrifices you’ve had to make. We hope that things will be really, truly different next year, and we’re doing our best to enhance the chances that all of us will be here to see and enjoy it and dispense many overly-intense hugs.

On this day of thanks, we give thanks for you. You give us a reason to get up and at ’em every day—that reason is a deadline, and since we publish at 3:30 a.m. Central, 365 days a year, we are never short of deadlines.

We love doing this. We love the MDK team, which has expanded this year as our small business grew to be a little less small, and we needed more help. We are deeply grateful that throughout these past months, our team stayed employed, our contributors kept contributing, and our payroll and vendors got paid. This happened thanks to kind knitters who purchase the things that we put in the MDK Shop with such excitement. Your support sends ripples throughout our community, in Nashville and all over our country and world.

It’s a bit last-minute for recipes for today, but we are making our standbys, even with fewer around the table to eat them. You’ll find links to some of the great and less-great-but-beloved MDK holiday recipes in the related content below. And Jen Geigley’s step-by-step tutorial to make the stockinette pie crust up top is right here.

Stay safe, keep knitting, and take care of each other.

Love,

Ann and Kay

P.S. If you are able to be charitable right now, the Nashville Food Project and West Side Campaign Against Hunger are fighting hard for people in need in these tough times.

  • Dear Ann and Kay,

You have been order in a world filled with chaos. In these days filled with “what fresh hell is this?” you have been a constant. A focal point. A safe space. You walked your talk with grace, humility, elegance, and humor. The “stash enhancement” has been a small price happily paid. I cherish you both.

    Love,
    Karen

    • Your blog (and store!) have been a lifeline. This site should be studied in universities as an example of how to have an online presence. Thank you, thank you, thank you!!!

      • 100% agree with this. Well said Martha.

    • Wow — perfect start to comments and thank you for saying it for me too. I also agree 100 percent. I always happily start my day with MDK. Happy turkey day and stay safe sister and brother knitters.

      • Joy and happiness to all! Let us light up and warm people we love with happy knits and deep deep gratitude!!! Love to all!

  • Totally agree!

  • Happy Gobble-Gobble day to all I pray that we’re all here to say that next year❤

  • Your 3:30 am deadline is greatly appreciated. You’re my first non-news read of the morning, and I give you full credit for all the days when the state of the world didn’t send me burrowing back beneath the covers, but rather up and to coffee and knitting with a little bit of peace.

    • Recently a close friend asked me how I get out of bed in the morning…which is a rather serious consideration some days given the current circumstances. In my first moments of any day, I check my email for the MDK email. It connects me to a world of creativity, inspiration, and comfort. All of which give me hope. Thank you.

  • Happy Thanksgiving to @moderndailyknitting. I truly enjoy your blog everyday and appreciate your early deadline. Continue your amazing work! Thank you!

  • Thank you Kay and Ann for your steadfastness – 365 days a year! MDK goes so well with early morning coffee and toast.

  • Thankful to Ann and Kay for creating this wonderful space and something to look forward to every day!

  • Ann and Kay, as others have said, you have been my daily safe harbor in a crazy world this year. A warm, funny, true to heart start to every day. Thank you both so much. And yes, I have definitely gotten into a fair amount of trouble in your wonderful store this year. My desire to support all that you offer is my excuse for extra shopping!

  • Happy Thanksgiving to you, Ann and Kay, and to all the MDK community!

  • Wishing you a very Happy Thanksgiving from British Columbia. And to let you know how thankful I am for your wonderful site and gathering place. For the past three years MDK has been a daily joy. Thank you.

  • What everyone else said…
You are my first read over breakfast every day.
Thank you , Kay and Ann.
You are a life line, a bit of joy, a lot of helpful tips, and some beautiful patterns.
    Happy Thanksgiving to you both.

  • Happy Thanksgiving to Ann, Kay, and everyone else at the MDK team! Thank you for being a daily moment of joy for me this year, as well as a source of knowledge via the lovely Field Guides. Most particularly, thank you for the community you’ve worked to create here, one that does the sometimes-challenging work in order to be truly welcoming to all.

  • Thank you to you, Kay and all the team and contributors who make MDK such a welcoming space all year round. I appreciate you ♡

  • I found MDK this year and I am SO GLAD I DID! 🙂 I am thankful for all of you and your delicious knitting knowledge!

  • Happy Thanksgiving from Scotland! You arrive with me mid morning most days just as I’m thinking about a second cup of coffee. You teach me new things, make me laugh (a lot), lift my heart and show me how to be in the world. I am greatly thankful for you in this year of all years.

  • Thanks for always being there throughout this year of uncertainty, MDK! Thankful for your early morning posts (especially when I’m up way too late/early with insomnia.) Thankful for your words of comfort and self care, always simultaneously helping us learn and grow (and knit on, through it all.) Happy Thanksgiving.

  • Thank you for being a daily bright spot and thank you for your 3.30am timeslot. It means that here, in the UK, there is still something new every morning.
