The Big Idea
In the years that we’ve been writing together, we’ve longed for a place on the internet where knitters could find fresh inspiration every day. Knitting is a big, wide world, and we want to bring it all to you. The yarn. The patterns. So much to learn!
We want to gather it all up in one place, invite everybody in, and start a never-ending conversation.
A place where the orange pekoe flows like a mighty river, and the knitting needles never rest.
A place with all the beautiful knitting we can find, and everything you need to make it.
What’s Not New
The two of us will still be here, carrying on as usual. See the Daily Letter, at the top right of the home page? That’s where you’ll find a note from one of us. The Letters link at the top left leads to all the letters we’ve written, going back to 2003. The old blog sparks joy for us, so those archives will live on in a dusty closet up there. (Take that, Marie Kondo!)
The Home Page. Every day we’ll give you something new—we kept calling it the “Big Thing of the Day,” so that name just sort of stuck. The home page will change constantly.
Talented writers and designers will begin to appear in our pages. Look for familiar names, and new ones, as our Contributors page fills up with smiling faces.
Who, you’re wondering? This week we will have the pleasure of introducing a new agony aunt to the world, in a column called “Dear Clara.” And yes, it’s that Clara, author, traveler and yarn whisperer Clara Parkes. (Send her a question!) Coming soon, we will have Franklin Habit, Julia Farwell-Clay, Ann Weaver, and many others. It’s been an absolute dream talking to writers we admire about what they will write for Mason-Dixon Knitting.
Departments. You’ll see our departments across the top of every page: Letters, How To, Projects, Inspiration, Fun, Travel, and Contributors. Click on these links, and vast acres of stuff open up. To help find your way around, each department landing page has a drop-down menu.
A Super Handy Thing. Look for a little flag symbol that appears in the upper right corner when you hover over an article. Click the flag, and it will save the item—an article, a pattern, or something in the shop—in your account. This makes it easy to return to something you want to refer to again. To retrieve a saved item, just go to your account, and it’s there. It’s great living in the future.
Our shop is like no other online shop. It will contain only the things that we personally want to knit and have in our lives. We have had the best time getting together with yarn makers that we love and cooking up ways to collaborate.
Because we’re new at this, the shop is starting out with baby steps. Right now, we have a few items on offer, including the Euroflax mini skeins that readers helped us choose colorways for. Guess what? We are stocking all four colorways picked by our Editor at Large, Melanie Falick. The votes split evenly, and we loved them all, so we are stocking them all. While supplies last!
Keep an eye on the shop—exciting things are coming, and soon.
On the horizon: the MDK Lounge. Our idea is simple: we just want people to be able to talk to each other more easily than a comments section permits. We have a wonderful moderator on board, and we’re looking forward to opening the doors to the MDK Lounge very soon.
Watch This Space
For us and our longtime readers, this is a lot of change. We’re full of energy and excitement for the weeks and months ahead, as we hit our stride and find our way. There will surely be evolution. Our ears are open. When you have a question or thought about what we’re doing, feel free to tell us what you think, either in a comment or via email.
We’ll be knitting like maniacs, and we hope you’ll join us.
