Believe it or not, Vogue Knitting Live! hits New York City THIS WEEKEND. Pack your bags, lady! Make sure you’ve got room for some stuff that you sincerely have no intention of acquiring.
Twinning: Our knitter’s totes at the end of the 2018 show. If you see us this year, check out how they’re holding up. (They’re holding up Just great.)
VKL New York is a wonderful annual gathering of knitters for classes, talks and panels, a gala dinner, fashion shows, and a marketplace that will bring a knitter to her knees. There are lots of beverages, snacks and meals along the way, plus all manner of side events. It’s a choose-your-own adventure type of weekend. Do it all, wander aimlessly in a haze of wool fumes, or just sit down on the kooky hotel carpet and knit. It’s up to you.
It’s always wildly amusing to spy so many knitters in Times Square, and even further afield in New York City. This is what the world could be like, if all the knitters got together, loud and proud, on an island. It reminds me of Marathon weekend, when you walk the city and think: “I had no idea this many people ran.” This many people do knit—and run!
This year, you and I will be around all weekend. Here’s where we’ll be at fixed times. We’d love to see you and say hi, so don’t be shy, wherever we run into you.
Friday, January 17, 12:30-2 pm: Diversity and Inclusion Panel
Vogue Knitting’s Diversity Advisory Council has assembled an extraordinary panel for this talk, in the Astor Ballroom on the 7th floor of the Marriott. See you there!
Friday, January 17, 6-10 pm: String Night
Saturday, January 18, 8:45 am: The VKL Subway Storm
Do you know about the VKL Subway Storm, brilliant idea of Kristy Glass? We’ll be in the throng that meets up Saturday morning, on the Downtown platform of the Times Square/42nd Street stop of the Number 1 train, ready to storm a subway car with knitters. (Last year 200 people showed up, and we spread into at least two cars—to the alarm, then delight of Saturday-morning straphangers.)
Kristy’s video of last year’s Subway Storm is up top. It’s better than caffeine—you’ll be AWAKE after this.
Remember: Bring your knitting! Wear your knitting! Prepare to hug! Re-apply lipstick as needed!
Saturday, January 18, from 5:00-6:00 pm
We’ll be signing Field Guides and meeting and greeting, hosted by Knitty City, my own ever-loving LYS in New York City, in Booth 712-716. (Thank you, Pearl!)
Meet Cecelia! (And us!)
This year we have a special treat: We’ll be signing with Cecelia Campochiaro, the unventor and author of Sequence Knitting and the featured designer in MDK Field Guide No. 5: Sequences. Come meet Cecelia and see what she’s up to these days. (Pssst: It’s a new book.)
Be sure to walk by the Knitty City booth early and often over the weekend, as they have a full schedule of appearances by a star-studded lineup. It’s a fun, easy-going way to meet people.
Sunday, January 19, 2 p.m.: Denise Bayron Meetup
Denise Bayron modeling her famous Hatdana. It’s a hat! It’s a bandana! More importantly, it’s a super-fun one-skein project.
We’re super fans of designer Denise Bayron and will be attending her meetup at the Special Events stage on Sunday afternoon. Hope to see you there!
A Word to the Wise
A free VKL Tip: Whenever you need to sit down for a while, head for the Special Event stage, where you’ll find a constant stream of fashion shows, talks, meetups—and chairs. Look for us!
