We are loving Shibui Drift for our recent Bang Out a Sweater knitalong, featuring Kate Davies’s Carbeth pullover.
To make Carbeth with Drift, here are the measurements and skein requirements. (See the Carbeth description for information on what size you should make.)
Finished bust measurement:
36½ (40, 43½, 48, 52½, 56, 59½) in. /
92.5 (101.5, 110.5, 122, 133.5, 142, 151) cm
Skeins of Drift required: 5 (6, 6, 7, 7, 8, 8). If you plan to modify the pattern length in any way, you’ll want to add at least one, probably two extra skeins. These specs are for the pattern exactly as written.
In searching for a yarn to use to make our Carbeth pullovers, we hit on an unorthodox choice. Yes, Shibui Drift is a worsted weight, and Carbeth calls for a gauge of 3½ stitches to the inch. But as we learned in our first Bang Out a Sweater with Mary Jane Mucklestone’s Stopover, it can be magic to knit a worsted weight yarn to a larger gauge.
Knitting this pattern with this Drift results in a lighter, looser and drapier fabric compared to knitting a bulky yarn to a bulky gauge. It’s a grand experiment in merino/cashmere lusciousness.
