Color Explosion Shawl: Virtual Workshop with Cecelia Campochiaro

By Cecelia Campochiaro

From: $149.00

This is going to be a blast—a color explosion, in fact.

Please join us on Friday, August 9, from noon-3:00 PM Eastern time, for a virtual workshop with renowned teacher Cecelia Campochiaro. In a 3-hour Zoom class, we’ll dive into the wondrous technique of marling—rich in tips and tricks, suitable for both newcomers and old hands. Scroll down for full details.

The project: Cecelia’s brand-new Color Explosion Shawl, featuring 6 shades of one of her all-time favorite yarns, Ito Kinu, a light and floaty silk noil that is perfect for all-season wear.

This virtual workshop includes the pattern download and complete yarn kit for the Color Explosion Shawl, in your choice of 3 colorways. (Please note: ignore “choose 2” instruction when selecting your colorway. Choose just one. Apologies for the computer glitch!)

Order by June 28, 2024 to ensure your kit arrives for the virtual workshop! Please note: This is a preorder and as such is not returnable. Kits will ship the week of July 22, 2024.

The Project

We’ll be making a brand-new marled design by Cecelia Campochiaro, the Color Explosion Shawl.

Finished dimensions: approximately 16 x 75 inches (40 x 190 cm).

If “Color Explosion” sounds familiar, it’s because it’s the same stitch motif used in Cecelia’s wildly popular Color Explosion Throw, a highlight of MDK Field Guide No. 19: Marls.

Knitters asked for a light, wearable Color Explosion, and here it is!

Workshop participants will be the first knitters of this beautiful new design. Prediction: your first will not be your last!

What’s in the Box?

Your kit will contain 6 delicious cones of Ito Kinu, a 100-percent silk yarn. Made with remnant fibers from spinning other pure silk yarns, it’s environmentally friendly, with a matte finish and beautifully nuanced color. And here’s a key factor for a marled scarf: Kinu can be held double and still achieve a lightweight fabric, suitable for year-round wear.

Choose from one of the three colorways that Cecelia put together from her seemingly endless private collection of Kinu. (We’re not saying this will be easy!)

Dahlias

For lovers of rich, warm colors.

Ocean Waves

This is the colorway used for the photography sample.

Rocky Earth

For the neutral lovers (we know who we are).

Our Workshop Leader

Cecelia Campochiaro grew up in a family of artists and has been knitting since she was 12. In her prior professional career, she developed finely calibrated machines that inspect computer chips. Cecelia left high tech in 2018 to focus on knitting.

While seeking simple knitting projects to take with her on business trips, Cecelia “unvented” a simple way of knitting in which complex-looking fabrics “just happen.” This discovery led to mountains of swatches, months of work, and the publication, in 2015, of her beautiful, groundbreaking book, Sequence Knitting: Simple Methods for Creating Complex Reversible Fabrics. Her latest book is Making Marls: A Sourcebook for Multistranded Handknitting, an exquisite exploration of knitting with multiple strands of yarn.

In high demand as a teacher, Cecelia travels the globe to work with knitters in person at festivals and retreats; a virtual workshop with her is a rare opportunity, and kind of a big deal!

May we brag for a moment? Cecelia is the featured designer for MDK Field Guide No. 5: Sequences, and MDK Field Guide No. 19: Marls. Her designs hit the sweet spot where simplicity of technique meets astonishing beauty; we will be knitting them on repeat for the rest of our lives.

Inquiring Minds Want to Know

Is the Color Explosion Shawl suitable for beginners? Yes! The project requires these basic skills: how to cast on, knit, purl, and follow a simple, intuitive chart. Cecelia makes the artistry part—choosing and combining colors for marls, and arranging them—playful and easy. Your color sense—and color confidence—will expand by leaps and bounds.

Do I have to order the kit in order to participate in the virtual workshop? Yes, it’s a complete experience. There’s an art to choosing the right yarns for marling, and we will all benefit from Cecelia’s expertise.

How should I get ready for the workshop? Make sure you order your kit and class by June 28, grab your needles, and you’re all set. Cecelia will be providing the pattern and handout before the event. We will also send you the Zoom link for class with a reminder the week of the class, and on the day.

What’s the format? With Cecelia’s instruction and an overhead camera focused on her hands, we’ll learn Cecelia’s micro-swatching technique, an ingenious way to mix and match color pairings, and then try out arrangements of our 2-color marls—super quickly. We’ll cast on and get into the first repeat, get more tips, tricks and guidance from Cecelia, and be on our way to Color Explosion Shawl glory. Participant mics will be muted most of the time, and the chat box will be monitored constantly for questions from participants.

How far along in my shawl can I expect to get during the workshop? While we of course will not complete the full shawl during the three-hour session, each participant will  leave with a beautiful, custom design for their shawl, and be off to a good start.  Given the “one more row” nature of this stitch motif, and the entertainment factor of ever-changing marls, we expect quick finishes!

When will the kits ship out? Kits will ship from Nashville, Tennessee the week of July 22, 2024. Please note that shipments to addresses outside the U.S. may not arrive in time for the live workshop on August 9.

What if I want to work at my own pace? That’s perfectly fine. All participants will receive the pattern and any additional information from Cecelia, and we will keep the session recording available to participants indefinitely.

I can’t make it to all of the live Zoom session. May I still participate? Yes! Everyone enrolled in the workshop will receive a link to the recording and all resources we share.
