Asterisk Hat and Dot Cowl Kit

By Swans Island, Michèle Rose Orne

Why do we love this yarn? It comes from people who care deeply about quality at every step of the yarnmaking process, which means that a skein of this yarn is all loaded up with thought and care and attention to detail. Also: it is very, very beautiful.

Each kit includes five skeins, enough yarn to make one Asterisk Hat and one Dot Cowl. If you like, you can reverse the stitch patterns to make a Dot Hat and an Asterisk Cowl.

This kit does not include the patterns. Michèle Rose Orne’s Asterisk Hat and Dot Cowl patterns appear in Modern Daily Knitting Field Guide No. 2: Fair Isle. Order your copy here. Available in both digital and print versions.

Every skein of Swans Island is dyed by hand. It is lovely stuff, with subtle shifts of color that add unusual depth to colorwork, as you can see in the Asterisk Cowl and Dot Hat. This All American Sport Weight is made from the wool of Rambouillet sheep out West, spun in a New England mill, then dyed in Northport, Maine at Swans Island’s dye house.

Why are we telling you all this?

Because we believe that good yarn comes with a story, and the story of Swans Island is a great one. 100% Rambouillet Wool.

This kit does not include the patterns. Michèle Rose Orne’s Asterisk Hat and Dot Cowl patterns appear in Modern Daily Knitting Field Guide No. 2: Fair Isle. Order your copy here. Available in both digital and print versions.

About the designer

Michèle Rose Orne has designed hundreds of patterns during her wide-ranging career—even, in one exotic moment, crazy Christmas sweaters. Her role as partner and creative director at Swans Island means she oversees both an all-natural, hand-dyed yarn company and an exquisite handwoven blanket business. She combines passion and experience in her design work, which includes the book Inspired to Knit (2008). We covet Swans Island blankets, which can be found at swansislandcompany.com.
