Albers Shawl Kit
This is the kit to make Amy Christoffers’s Albers Shawl in Mason-Dixon Knitting Field Guide No. 6: Transparency. Four elegant skeins knit up into a lightweight wrap you will always want to have with you.
Inspired by the work of Bauhaus textile artist Anni Albers, Amy Christoffers plays with the transmission of light in this shawl. The background colors shift as you go, worked in Shibui’s Reed, a crisp linen. Shibui Pebble—a slightly nubbly blend of silk, merino, and cashmere—is used to make “windows” of color by adding a strand and knitting it together with the Shibui Reed. It’s intarsia without worrying about gaps at the color changes, a simple and liberating way to play with color and see one color “through” another.

The Albers Shawl is not only a versatile accessory that is a pleasure to wear, even in warmer temperatures, it’s a fun knit that you can take with you on your rambles. It’s easy stockinette all the way, with the satisfyingly simple trick of adding “windows” of color by picking up a strand of Pebble and knitting it together with the background yarn, Reed. The unfinished edges roll ever so slightly, for a modern, easy-going touch.
Like all of Shibui’s offerings, these are elegant yarns. Reed is 100% linen. Pebble is a toothsome combination of 48% recycled silk, 36% fine merino wool, and 16% cashmere.
While working on the design, Amy Christoffers could not stop coming up with alternative arrangements of the windows. Her guiding principle: to be able to knit the graphic design without cutting the yarn (a rule that she only broke once). Four of Amy’s additional ideas are included with the pattern.
