Lazy Sunday Live: I Know Where I’m Going!
By the time you read this, our hope is that we have successfully figured out how to stream this movie here at the Knitting Getaway. Maybe we got it up onto the big screen in McCrory Auditorium; maybe we huddled around my laptop; maybe we acted it out in the courtyard. At any rate, this seemed the perfect movie to sit and knit to in the company of knitters. (Runners up were The Age of Innocence and The English Patient, the ultimate chick flick.) Here’s Kay’s letter about I Know Where I’m Going, from April. Settle in and enjoy!
Dear Ann,
Recently a friend told me about a 1945 movie I’d never seen: I Know Where I’m Going! starring Wendy Hiller and Roger Livesey. Over 25 years ago, after seeing the movie on television, my friend was moved to travel to Mull, the island in the Inner Hebrides where it was filmed.
What with your tantalizing posts from Edinburgh, and our immersion in Susan Crawford’s Vintage Shetland Project, I wanted to see this movie simply to enjoy more of Scotland. The plot is simple: a young Englishwoman is trying to get to the island of Killoran to marry her wealthy fiance, but fate and the weather have other plans. I wanted to know how an old movie could motivate my friend to get on a ship and cross the ocean to see its setting.
Well, it’s that good. Scotland lovers, and lovers of romance, get to Amazon Prime and watch it. (You can rent the DVD from Netflix, and apparently it has wonderful extra features.)

I loved this film and was shocked to find an old movie that I had not seen. I am a big AMC fan and little has escaped me but this one..it was lovely! Thank you for sharing.
I love this movie and first learned about it from a post by Kate Davies. Kate had a piper play the song from the wedding “ho ro, my nut brown maiden” at her wedding (https://katedaviesdesigns.com/2015/07/30/29003/). So apropos, as Kate is certainly a woman who knows where she is going.
Great fun watching at MDK Knitting Getaway. Cheering for the kilts, socks, and hand knits. Fabulous weekend and great time had by everyone. Thank you Ann and Kay
The scenery was magnificent. I loved the dancing scenes, and (of course) the hand knits. I think that I would like to visit that place after seeing the film. I can imagine a chilly, foggy night sipping a rusty nail at the local pub. The thing is, the rugged terrain would be tough to negotiate ( guess it’s time to consider that other knee surgery….). Loved the ending, too.
What fun!
My favorite part of the screening at the getaway was when someone got a little enthusiastic about the shoutalong and called out ‘Dead Fox!’ at the appropriate moment.
I watched this a couple weeks ago, because you said to. I wish I was at Shakerag watching it again!

This is one of mine and my husband’s favorite movies! We planned our honeymoon based on it – stayed at the Western Isles Hotel and even drove out to the phone booth at the bottom of the falls. Incidentally, that drive is pretty treacherous.
