Atlas Insider: An Ode to Color
I’ve always loved bright colors. When I was 6 I convinced my parents to wallpaper my entire bedroom with a floral Monet print—thousands upon thousands of repeated yellow, blue, purple, and pink flowers. On all four walls. When I was 8 or 9, disco became my obsession. I plastered my room with yellow smiley faces, LED lights, and mirrored balls, and blasted KC and the Sunshine Band on the reg.
My love of color stuck with me into my design career, and I couldn’t help but add large splashes on everything I created. Lime, yellow, lavender, neon orange—nothing was ever off limits to me.
In the last two years, however, I have felt the desire to tone it down. Sometimes an all black ensemble feels calming—a way for me to blend into my surroundings so that I can remain as flatlined as possible. That had me wondering whether I was changing my taste or just feeling like my light had dulled from the insanities of the last couple of years.
In my reliably-restless state, I was craving to knit something that actually resembled a garment. If you remember my posts of yore, I have stuck to accessories and/or square/rectangle based accoutrements. These felt doable to me. But as a lover of fashion with an eye on the knitwear gracing the runways these days, I wanted to step up my game.
ENTER THE SWEATER VEST.
My coworker, friend, and personal yarn guru Allison Volek Shelton introduced me to PetiteKnit some time ago and I really loved the ease and sophistication of her designs. Her Holiday Slipover seemed like the perfect thing to get me started knitting garments.
I had been wanting to use our Atlas yarn since it landed in our warehouse, and—held double—it was a perfect fit for this project. I felt hesitant when it came to choosing the color.
Did I really want a chunky oversized sweater vest in a loud color? Would I feel too exposed? Embarrassed? Uncomfortable? All of these feelings could be true, but something deep inside of my little Ashley soul was begging for some light.
And so the Citron Sweater Vest was born. A gushy, mushy, unapologetic FIRST knitted garment to brighten my life and wardrobe. If you’re in the Nashville area and you see something in your peripheral that resembles someone that rhymes with Fig Fird that’s me.
I think it’s okay to search out a reason to feel brave and this was it for me. I needed a push to feel okay being visible in the world. And THAT, my friends, is the magic of fashion.

Seaglass. I live on an island and I remember picking up a piece of seaglass just that color when I was tiny and giving it to my mom. She still has it in her jewelry box 50+ years later. I’d make her a hat with the yarn.

I love Clementine but also my old standby neutral, navy!! A bit split — so maybe Pear would be a good compromise!

Pear has been making me think about making a pair of fingerless gloves for a pop of color when the skies are winter grey.

Because it’s officially fall, Clementine! However, I’ve tried before to choose one or two favorite Atlas colors and it just can’t be done, I love them all! If I ever purchase a lottery ticket and if that ticket turns out to be a winner, my plan for the windfall is to purchase a minimum of 10 skeins of every, single, color of Atlas, lol!

Mallard, mallard, mallard … my hands seem to reach for shades of deep blue- green all the time, so much so that my sister laughs at me every time we are in a yarn shop.
I get really itchy and nervous around color. My idea of a colorful garment is the Cider Mill sweater pictured in a previous article (look at all that color–do I have anything in the closet that goes with it?). But, if I were forced to choose, I’d pick the merlot. It looks warm and inviting without being too brash.
Like Ashley, I wonder with every garment whether to go loud or quiet with color. All the clothes in my closet are quiet (black, gray, navy, white) so when I knit garments I usually want a splash of color. Also, I dont want to get bored knitting a sweater, which takes me months to finish. Barn Red in Atlas looks like it could do the trick – a bold but go-with-everything color.

Lapis is certainly a bright color in a very good way but I think for me barn red is my favorite.
Seaglass and Mallard – wonderful colors. A color I would have liked to have seen, though, was some shade of grey, light to medium. Goes with everything.
I just finished the Ironworks Beret in Atlas. Good pairing! For colors calling me, I’d say Mallard and Clementine.

I love bright colors; I am going to knit my first cardigan this fall. I too have mostly knit shawls and dish cloths, etc. My favorite Atlas colors are Lapis and Citron.

This was easy – I don’t care whose yarn it is – I always look to see if there is a Citron (acid yellow/lime green) available — that color always speaks to me. The next is Clementine – or something near to that shade of orange/rust. Then we move into other colors depending on mood.

I know this isn’t a color, per se, but it’s a choice: Natural. That way, I could dye it into a variegated colorway which would be so fun. I love Atlas and would be thrilled to try this.

I’m really attracted to the Seaglass. I think because it is different from any clothing I own. I wear bright colors and sometimes wonder if when I finally get approved for cataract surgery, if I will be surprised at how bright they actually are. The Sea glass yarn looks perfect.

I’ve been lusting after Peat and Cedar, but Pear might be the 2nd choice for a real splash of color. And the soft Tutu would be perfect for legwarmers in ballet class this winter. I have brioche mitts almost finished in Clementine paired with a natural white wool from a local farm – but I have to go back to Peat and Cedar for the Ironworks beret.

I am UNapologetically a lover of yellow. I think I was inspired by the yellow pottery plates my grandmother served Sunday dinner on. That must be the reason as my brother is a fanatic for yellow too. I salute your yellow vest. It’s perfectly wonderful on you.
Honestly, Atlas comes in a number of colors that make my heart sing. Lapis is number one. I love a deep shade of blue. Mallard, Wintergreen, and Leek all scream life and energy to me, and if I feel a need for softness, Leek will do for that, too. Whisper and Tutu are likewise gentle.
