This is so much fun! Greetings to all who are banging out a Carbeth—I am loving the sight of so many crazy yarn combinations, the brave stash-diving, the general willingness to go where no knitter has gone before. Instagram #bangoutacarbeth is already very interesting.
My own Carbeth swatching has gone on for a while.
I kept poking around, trying yarns. Then, like a gold miner digging out a nugget, I came upon this.
I knitted this in a fever, because this merino/cashmere stuff is so tender that all I could imagine was making a Carbeth in such a soft, special yarn. You know that thing where you wish and dream and and hope and pray it might come true? You know, like the Beach Boys song? Wouldn’t it be nice?
Swatch 1, at top, is knit with a single strand. I went with a 10 1/2 needle. It looked good. But it was 16 stitches/4″ before washing. I wasn’t sure it would end up at the pattern gauge of 14 stitches/4″.
So I knit another swatch with Drift held double to see if that would win the day. That’s the bottom swatch.
After washing and blocking (not stretching it, just leaving it to dry on the counter), I was happy to see that the single-strand Drift swatch hit gauge. The double-stranded swatch was only 12 stitches/4″.
Moral of the story: wash and block your swatch. Things happen! Dreams can come true! You can be a living Beach Boys song!

A Crazy Fast Knit
I am stunned at how fast this sweater is happening. I started this in size 2, in a moment of delusion, then ripped out five inches to try again in size 3. Even with the backtracking, I’m two-thirds through this sweater in four days.
I even fed the cat at some point in there. So it’s not like I’m a pathetically obsessed knitter. Or anything.
I added an inch and a half to the torso, and three inches to the cuffs because I like the doubled cuffs and I’ve got long arms. I’m probably going to go into an extra skein, so if you’re thinking of modifying length, it’s a good idea to get an extra skein or two.
Head over to the Lounge to see all the Bang Out a Carbeth swatching and strategizing and general carrying on.
Thanks, Kate, for the fun. And thanks to fellow Carbethers—it’s feeling like we’ll be banging out a bunch of sweaters this month.
