Atlas Insider: Come On In!
Dear Everybody,
While DG Strong may be the OG Atlas Insider, forever and ever, amen—we have dreamed of the day when we could invite all of you to be Atlas Insiders—in the literal sense of being on the inside of our warehouse on Atlas Drive in Nashville.
Last weekend, on October 1 and 2, it finally happened.
Our personal camera rolls are filled with SO MANY MICRO SWATCHES, proving that the Felted Tweed palette is one of the best in the business. I don’t think we saw any marl repeats.
Most of the photos up top were taken by Allison Volek Shelton, in fleeting moments when she wasn’t doing everything else she was doing.
We had a blast.
Our heartfelt thanks to everyone who made the trip to Atlas, whether you came from across the country (23 states were represented!) or across town. We loved seeing your faces, even behind masks. We loved watching you dig in to Cecelia Campochiaro’s marvelous experiments with marls—and all the beautiful marled projects that were started during those two days together.
Let’s do it again as soon as we can—the more we get together, the happier we’ll be.

I bought yarn for the Spectra sweater and found yarn in stash for a single panel of the throw to make a scarf. It’s a toss-up between these 2.

The construction is so original and smart, and the marling so lovely.
But I have to second that emotion that “dickie” is a most unfortunate name!! SWARF it is! And Cecelia’s is amazing.

With the feel of Fall in the air ‘Making Marls’ and which direction projects are going – “scarf or cowl” has taken over conversations with other Oct 1-2 Weekend participants. Creating felted tweed swatches has become addictive as new color combinations multiply. Who thought swatching could be fun? Meeting the MDK family in person was a treat, as we found we have mutual connections from Albuquerque to Louisville to other locations across the world. Looking forward to seeing everyone again! A Reunion! Sign me up!

My favorite design from Making Marls is Fabian, and I’ve now knit it twice. Who doesn’t love an accordion rib knit on the bias? And there is so much opportunity to be creative with marled stripes. As a designer, Cecelia can do no wrong

I’ve cast on the Color Explosion Throw and could not be happier. Actually, also very pleased with myself that my confusion about the directions for Marl #4 on the first stripe in the print version of Field Guide No. 19 led me to “Corrections” (https://www.moderndailyknitting.com/errata/). It is good to be reminded that we grow by testing what we know and what we think ought to be. Thanks to the MDK team for making pattern corrections clear and accessible!

I love them all but I’ve never knit marls so I’ll probably start with the hat.
As an experiment with color, I like the scarf and the suggested color burst yarn. I am also drawn to the side to side sweater for the colors and new technique which I have wanted to attempt. But I may try the hat first. Oh, wait, maybe the blanket…

The Spectra sweater – sideways and with a cooling v-neck! Crew neck and turtlenecks are contraindicated at this stage of life! How to narrow down the colour though.

The color variation and texture of the marlogram speak to me. But, the sweater is what make we want to dive into the pattern, choose colors and cast on.

Well before clicking over to Cecelia’s website and seeing the Cayley scarf I might have said neither, as apparently marls remind me of the ragg wool socks of my youth albeit more colorful versions, but there’s a personal hang-up going on there. I really don’t know why. However, as I said I do like the look of the Cayley. I have been a fan of the Felted Tweed since the 80s and Kaffe brought it to my attention. I have never actually knitted with it though.

The sweater and the blanket are a tie for me. But I’ll start with the blanket as a scarf idea from the weekend.
FG 19 because Color Explosion and Spectra will be in my que and it supplements the depth of info in Making Marls! I’ll be micro swatching soon

Making Marks. There are lovely designs in the Field Guide; nevertheless, I’m the kinda gal who wants someone to show me the way and stand back. That makes the mistakes all mine.
My favorite project is from Field Guide 19, The Color Explosion Throw. I have a passion for comfy blankets to read under, or knit under when my problematic hands will let me. I love the reds used in the example. It reminds of strawberry shortcake. Living in Michigan, this would be a great fall project before the cold winter winds arrive.

I purchased a number of alpaca lace yarns which are not likely to be all knitted into lace FO’s… Marling will be a more likely way of using them!

The Marlogram cowl…love small projects these days. The gathering looks like it was great fun; compliments to everyone for doing everything possible to have a safe event and it should serve as an example of great planning!
The striped marled hat because hats and mittens are my favorite things to knit as they are quick, very portable, good “palate cleanser” between bigger projects (or when another project needs a time out), great for when your attention is divided (watching my kids play sports, babysitting the toddler grandkids, knitting while reading), and they are very easy to gift! Although the micro swatches may become a minor obsession. So many colorful combos! And textural… kidsilk or suri with felted tweed?, match or contrast the colors?… hmmm. (PS- probably going to have a pair or 6 of striped marled mittens in the queue. Just sayin’.)
I wish I wish I wish I SO wish I could have joined y’all for the wonderful weekend extravaganza. Thank you for the pictures, it just makes me feel worse, LOL. Hopefully next time…it’s a long way from California! I am completely smitten with the Color Explosion blanket. All those phenomenal colors, marked yo to make even more phenomenal colors…I’m saving up my pennies to get myself a holiday gift. Or maybe I will just let Husband gift it to me, yes, that’s the ticket…

Oh! There are so many wonderful patterns in both Making Marls and the Marls Field Guide! I love the Coltrane and Armstrong Improv Triangle Shawls and really love the Rialto scarf from Making Marls, but I am also loving the Parallelogram Scarf from Sequences Field Guide and the Marlogram Scarf from Marls Field Guide. I will also probably knit that great sideways Spectra Sweater from Marls Field Guide!

I am a fan of Field Guide 19. There’s an opportunity to work several marked projects, each one better than the last. I’m working on the Marlogram Cowl right now and will do the Spectra sweater next. Making Marls is a beautiful book but I spend more time looking at the pictures than knitting. It’s easier for me to take a few projects at a time to decide to work on so the Field Guides are perfect for me.

I SO wish I lived closer to Nashville especially for your event. Another time perhaps. I love the new field guide and there are a few of the patterns that I’d like to try. At some point the Color Explosion Throw but the two I am debating between to try first are the Spectra Sweater and the Swarf. I have a feeling the Swarf is going to win out with the cooler weather inching towards the Northeast and the unpredictable inner temperature fluctuations. A little more layering is nice but not necessarily over the whole torso. Thanks for all you do at MDK. I am always smiling when I see your emails in my inbox or open a package of ordered items.

Glad to here the get together was enjoyable. When we get together it seems more fulfilling than any online venue (but those are better than nothing). I prefer the book Making Marls because it goes into more depth about the technique. You really have to try it to experience the magic though. That is where the field guides come in because they give you more patterns to try out.

I loved the workshop and was thrilled to be there in person. Cecelia suggested making one panel of the blanket as a scarf so I’m going with that. Still playing a bit with my mini swatches and I’m happy with the combos I came up with. Mini swatching is an amazing process and I highly recommend it. More fun than you would think too!

Late last year, inspired by Cecelia’s FG Sequences and the new marls craze, I made a MDK inspired log cabin lap blanket using a different stitch pattern in each block, with two colors of stashed Rowan Felted Tweed at a time, changing one color for each new block. I love how it looks, the double strands make it extra warm, and it earned a ribbon at our county fair!

(and after the marlogram I’m DEFINTELY going to give the Color Explosion Throw a try so I really need to start collecting my Rowan Felted Tweed!!) Pick me please!!!

I’m enjoying MDK Field Guide Knitting Field Guide No. 19 very much. I’m going to go camping with the Striped Marl Hat pattern and some yarn that I just ordered in the “slate” colorway. I like the little book very much!

I’m most interested in the Spectra sweater. It looks like a lot of fun to make and a different style than I’ve done before. I’ve seen a video of Cecelia on Fruity Knitting I think and it was a very interesting interview. I look forward to trying some of her designs. Your Field Guides are great, I have several.

I’m back into knitting scarves and cowls so I think I’d try the Marlogram Scarf first.
I’m loving the Spectra sweater – the garter stitch ribbing on the bottom is particularly clever.
