Dear Kay,

Here’s some Nate Bargatze for you.

I first came across Nate Bargatze when he appeared at the Ryman in Nashville during one of Chris Thile’s Live from Here shows (the show formerly known as A Prairie Home Companion). (I confess that I do not miss A Prairie Home Companion.) (Life is enough of a slog already!)

Nate was very funny at the Ryman, and now he’s got a Netflix special, The Tennessee Kid. And a TV show in the works. SO PROUD.

He’s a fellow Nashvillian—an Old Hickorian, actually, which puts him about fifteen miles east of Nashville. To be clear, I have not met Nate, did not go to school with Nate, am not related to Nate. I like to think that the metropolitan Nashville region is big enough that I don’t know every single person who lives here. But I do refer to him by his first name as if I know the guy.

The Los Angeles Times just put The Tennessee Kid in their category of Underrated: “It’s a strange alchemy that makes a person funny. At the intersection of calm confidence and a delivery so deadpan there seems no awareness anything being said is funny lies comic Nate Bargatze, whose latest Netflix special is a killer.”

And here’s where you’ll find The Tennessee Kid—assuming you’re a Netflix subscriber. Trying not to assume anything these days. Maybe you Hulu. Maybe you watch TV on your PlayStation. Maybe that red Netflix logo is just too red. I do not judge—I mean, I don’t watch Starz because there’s a Z on there, everybody’s got something they don’t like.

I’m just putting this out there in the hope that somewhere, somebody will fire up some Nate Bargatze and keep one nostril above the muck for one more day.

Knit on y’all!

Love,

Ann

  • Ann oh my stars thanx for introducing me to Nate!!!!

  • Watched him on the Tonight Show last night. So funny! I am definitely going to watch his Netflix show.

  • OMG, just watched that little mini clip (about Olivia) with subtitles and no sound…and I’m in tears Definitely added to My List. Thank you!

  • Watched him last weekend and laughed until I hurt. And not that profanity puts me off, but it was refreshing to not have it there. He’s amazing!

    • I agree completely–I’m not averse to a gigantic swearfest, at all. But it something very interesting to see a comedian do an entire hour without a single f bomb. So glad you like him too!

  • Can we be friends with him? Dying laughing. WHICH I NEED BECAUSE OLIVE AND I ARE DOING THE TAXES.

  • I’m thinking, “Nate Bargatze. Why do I know that name?” Oh, yeah, I was at the Ryman that night, too! Thanks for the reminder. DH and I will be watching the Tennessee Kid…and laughing our heads off! Will this affect my gauge?

  • I just love this site and all your recommendations. I spend so much time looking for things to watch and listen to while knitting and there is just so much out there that sometimes its hard to filter. But I definitely am going to listen to The Tennessee Kid today. And I already started Mrs WIlson (anything on Masterpiece is great). One more thing to say, I love that us knitters have such a great sense o.f humor and appreciation for it. Thanks again
