[Editors’ Note: Thank you for your amazing entries to the giveaway! We have awarded the prize and the giveaway is now closed. Congrats to Susan F.!]
It’s a special day when we have the chance to announce the arrival of new yarn. New yarn is like a new baby, or kitten, or puppy around here.
After a fairly lengthy incubation period, Alice O’Reilly of Backyard Fiberworks fame has delivered unto us a precious cargo of eight new, MDK-exclusive shades of Sock, a 100% merino superwash that MDK knitters have ordered up with glee over the past year.
We now carry a palette of 16 exclusive shades. They are glorious. They are artful. Alice is just so talented and so careful in her work.
As you know, we love a fingering weight sweater. In expanding our selection of Backyard Fiberworks shades, we were looking to create a palette that would yield perfect pairings for colorwork sweaters, and also for shawls and accessories.
We think Alice hit the target in the exact center. This palette is vibrant, rich and eminently wearable.
Instant Obsession
Sometimes we see a design and just about lose our minds. That’s what happened when I got a look at Isabell Kraemer’s confection of a wrap, A Girl’s Best Friend.
It’s a game of texture, proportion, color, bobbles, and . . . pom poms.
It’s fun, that’s all. It’s exactly what I was craving after finishing my Sail-Away Shawl, which was a glorious garter stitch ride.
And our new colors of Backyard Fiberworks were rattling around in my head. The combinations are many. Up top, you can click through the gallery of possible combinations I put together. Two lighter shades and a dark? All dark? All light? Tonal or contrasty? You can see all 16 shades in the MDK Shop and make up your own combination. (Please note that Isabell’s sample is made with three different yarns from Manos, Shalimar, and Wool of Fame. So those colors are not part of our Backyard Fiberworks palette.)
My Choice
I went with Slate, Wine Dark Sea, and Blue Jean Baby.
The textures are great.
Right when you start to have had enough, guess what: it’s time for something else.

I have been eyeing this pattern for a while (pom poms! yes pom poms! I’d only modify this pattern by adding more pom poms!). I haven’t purchased it already only because I’ve been deliberating about colors/yarns… now this giveaway is doing at least some of the work for me. The yarn, the colors… love them all. But, with much internal debate, I’ve come up with:
Jamberry
Slate
Inkling
Fingers crossed that this will be the next project to interrupt all my other WIPs 🙂
OMG How do you narrow it down! Jamberry, Winedarksea Inkberry I think?
How to choose just one trio????!!! Okay, okay, I choose Pumpkin, peat, and chestnut.
Inkling, Blue Jean Baby and Dusty Chalkboard–hard choice with such gorgeous yarns!

Blue Jean Baby, Inkling, and Pumpkin/Local Honey/Dusty Chalkboard— it is too hard to choose that last color! Thanks for a great giveaway of great yarn from a great person!
Chestnut, inkling and jamberry
Jamberry, Inkling, and Dusty Chalkboard
It had to be Chestnut, Pumpkin, and Inkling. these 3 colors are the centerpiece of my warerobe planning right now. There are so many colors that go with them. Best of all jeans and classic navy clothing like oxford shirts, etc. are instant mix and match.
After a bit of pondering….Blue Jean, Inkling and Chestnut!
Pepper sprout, local honey, and chestnut. All the colors are gorgeous. And such a beautiful pattern.
Inkling, Chestnut, Dusty Chalkboard

Oh wow! These are just lovely. I vote for Dust, Dime, and the unnamed 650-A5, which is kind of a fuchsia, right??? (Others have referred to a Jamberry — is it the same? — but I don’t see that name when I access the product page.)
I could spend all day making combos but since I need to do something beside ogle yarn, I’m going with inkling, pumpkin and chestnut

Inkling, dusty chalkboard and slate!!! Great winter colors
Inkling, wine dark sea, Jamberry
I love, love, love this yarn so much but have a hard time choosing colors. I purchased yarn to make a yoke sweater last year. One thin dine is a slam dunk for the body but I have 4 different colors for the yoke and have only just narrowed down the pattern to either Humulus or Selja and possibly jamberry. So, how can I decide on a trio??? After sorting threw the colors yet again, I’m pretty sure one thin dime (yet again), jamberry (ditto) and pumpkin (because it’s so gorgeous). Whew, that was hard!
I’m torn between the combo of slate, inkling and one thin dime or peat, winter wheat and sage. Both combinations would make a stunning shawl. All of the colors are absolutely lovely!
Wine Dark Sea, Pumpkin & Chestnut. The first two colors are Virginia Tech colors. I live in Blacksburg and have many Hokie events where I can proudly wear a shawl of these colors!
Sage, Chestnut, and Inkling, glorious!
Inkling, Chestnut, and Maize (sounds like the title of a fairy tale)
Blue jean baby, dusty chalkboard and jamberry.
