Dear Kay,

MDK does not have an official band, but if we did, Vulfpeck would be on the short list for sure. We have previously discussed our love of this funk band, founded in deepest Michigan, by a “reform Jew who has a deep love of funk.”

It’s all here: Vulfpeck founder Jack Stratton connects the dots between playing in his dad’s klezmer band and the volcanic success of Vulfpeck. Along the way, he explains why the Jackson 5’s “I Want You Back” may be the greatest song ever. And Billy Joel. And “Mr. Big Stuff.”

“I’ve just been on a path of the best-feeling records,” he says.

So much to love in this conversation between Leo Sidran and Jack Stratton.

Leo Sidran’s podcast The Third Story is one of those great creations of a guy who has a lot of varied interests. He’s tracking down all kinds of people involved in creative pursuits. He’s just a great conversationalist.

Hearing musicians’ origin stories is so fantastic.

Love,

Ann

PS If you want to get your Vulfpeck groove on, here’s Kay’s post explaining how she came down with Vulfpeck fever.

And here’s a post I wrote about loving our kids’ music. And a great video:

  • Oh my god, I love you guys. You love all the best things. I discovered Vulfpeck on the soundtrack of HBO’s super great series, High Maintenance. (Watch it, please!!) Their contribution(s) to the soundtrack made me sit up and say “Wha??? Who IS this?” I’ll be listening to my High Maintenance and Vulfpeck Spotify lists today for sure.

  • Hey honey, I been drinkin’ Ovaltine, since I was 14.

So so so so so good. They give me life, and I still smile that when David and his buddy went to “a show in Brooklyn” it was Vulfpeck. He showed great discernment not to tell me in advance.
