Today I’m knitting to music.  Sisters Shelby Lynne and Allison Moorer have just released Not Dark Yet. They’ve been harmonizing on Everly Brothers songs since they were little, and both are well-known singer/songwriters, but this is their first album together, a collection of covers.

I know the denizens of Casa Shayne are big Louvin Brothers fans, so hope you like this one:

I will shamelessly brag that Allison is the adored baby sister of our sewing circle. She sews as beautifully as she sings, and that’s saying something. The rest of us look on in wonderment as Allison cranks out one exquisite Alabama Chanin piece after another. (There are glimpses of a long skirt in Fly Low Stay Close up top.)

Here’s a live version of Not Dark Yet, by Bob Dylan. There’s something bone-chilling about sisters singing, the meld of voices, the shared heartache and defiance, the seamless shift from melody to harmony, back and forth, call and response.

While writing this post, I went down deep into a YouTube rabbit hole. Shelby singing Dusty! Allison’s Oscar-nominated song (A Soft Place to Fall)! I just let them roll, and loved it all.

Enjoy, and get your hands on this record however you get your music these days. If you’re still into CDs (like an old broad I know—oh wait, it’s me), you can get one right here.

  • I love this album so much. I can do without their Lithium cover but all in all, their voices, song choice, everything makes this album superb. For Sirius subscribers, Hayes Carll hosted an hour long show with the both of them, chatting it up, playing cuts and maybe even playing a couple songs live.
Love the tidbit about your sewing circle! 😀

  • MDK…All The Way. Thanks for turning me on to this, Kay. Everything I need comes from you and Ann. xo

  • Not Dark Yet…a song for our times! Thanks for this.

  • Thought i’d have a listen and was pleasantly surprised-thank you xx

  • I’ve loved Allison Moorer since “The Horse Whisperer”. I can conjure up “A Soft Place to Fall” and that scene of Robert Redford and Kristin Scott Thomas slow dancing (and yearning) in a heartbeat!

  • Thank you for pointing me in the direction of new (to me) music to listen to while I knit. I didn’t care much for their cover of Lithium but I’ve already decided I prefer their style covering ballads. I know what YouTube rabbit hole I’m falling down today! I can’t think of a better way to enjoy that first coffee of the day than with good music.

  • I loved this music, I immediately added it to my Spotify account, thank you!
