Dear everybody including Kay,

Suffering from post-Labor Day droops? Your kid won’t pose for his back-to-school photo anymore? Wishing that you had some way to survive your commute without having to listen to that bass-fishing podcast? Why, there’s a brand-new solution to your woes.

The audiobook edition of Bowling Avenue is ready! It’s done! Come on, it’s a juicy way to fill 12 hours and 20 minutes with a rich and fulfilling tale of a young woman who faces the most daunting of all odysseys: a return to Nashville, Tennessee.

It’s available at Amazon, iTunes, and Audible.com. (You can get it for free at Audible.com if you become an Audible member.)

If you like, you can hear the first five minutes of it here.

I had a great and by great I mean crazy time doing the narration under the guidance of The Rockethouse, a production company in Scotland run by dear pals Matt Thompson and Yolanda Pupo-Thompson. I can honestly say that I have never before taken direction via Skype for an audiobook narration. Highly recommended! You feel like you’re on Apollo 13! High stakes!

Anyway, I hope you all will enjoy this. The best way to listen to Bowling Avenue is to get a giant knitting project going, say Kay’s blanket pattern, A Light in the Window, and dive in.

There are exciting things on the horizon, so please stay tuned.

Love,

Ann

PS I continue to be knocked out by all the comments on my previous post. Thank you guys for such insight into your experiences with midlife frankness. So frustrated that we can’t continue this discussion in a less fragmented way. Oh wait: maybe there IS a way. Stay tuned!

  • Hmmm, what are you up to Missy?
Loved Bowling Avenue (ordinary book version) by the way…

  • Hoo! and also, Ray! I’ve been waiting and waiting and now I’m off to buy a book 🙂

  • Congratulations! And…in spite of how 21st century the whole thing is, you look very old-fashioned and cozy in front of that big microphone. It must be the handknits!

  • Please, please, please write a sequel!!!!! I loved it so much!!!!

  • That is *some* recording studio. Love the selection of insulating material.

  • Great idea! Bowling Avenue, here I come.
Just read your previous post and could not agree more! From the perspective of age 66, let me tell you that honesty and niceness CAN go hand in hand. Just takes some wit, and you have enough of that to spare! Recently I watched an “Actors Studio” interview with Ricky Gervaise (sp?). When asked what he learned from his parents, he said they taught him that “the truth does not hurt.” YES, I thought. It’s true, true, true.

  • Loved the book! How great to hear it in your “voice”!
Per your previous post – My DH often turns to me and says (with great sarcasm) “No! Tell us how you REALLY feel, Karen!”
As my mother hit her 70’s, if she didn’t like something we said or did, she’d say our name and make sure Dad couldn’t see as she’d flip us off! I’m afraid the “frankness” is genetic!
(I’m 59, just short of 60 and you know age doesn’t matter any more when you getting excited about where you can shop or eat for a “senior discount”!)

  • WAA-HOOOO! I’ve always loved your voice, and I’ve always loved your words, and now we have a Reese’s Peanut Butter Cup of two great tastes that taste great together in this audiobook. Bravo and thank you!

  • All Right! I have realized here lately that I’m still a big time reader… but now most of my books are audiobooks. I listen when I drive, when I sew and when I knit. So I have read (and loved) your book but I am going to love it while knitting this time around!

  • I checked Audible last week and there it was! I’m enjoying it SO much.

  • Look at you, so cute reading into that big mic, surrounded by knits. Way to go! I loved Bowling Avenue. May have to listen to at least the five minutes to hear your voice. Although I did meet you once at Powell’s here in Portland, years ago…

  • Dear Ann,
I was one of the ones fortunate enough to be gifted with a freeola e-copy of Bowling Avenue before it was available in print last year. And I am the one who misread the title and thought it was Bowling Alley instead of Avenue and couldn’t figure out how come no one in the story seemed to set foot in a bowling alley. I’m still laughing over that one… And I am the one who stayed up ’til the wee hours of the morning on a work day to read.
I loved the book when I read it and as I frequently do, I re-read the books I love, often many times. And so it came to pass a couple of weeks ago that it was time for me to re-read Bowling Avenue. I am a firm believer in honouring artists for their work, so I set about to order a hard copy.
And then, something made me think about audio books of which I am a huge fan – they allow me to knit, sew and do all kinds of cool stuff and still be entertained. I can rewind and listen to a chapter or a paragraph over and over again. Love doing this when something really tickles my funny bone. And so on an off chance, I typed in the title on my Audible.com account and lo and behold there it was.
The really big bonus was that you, Ann, was the narrator. I thought I’d died and gone to heaven. How cool is that, to be read to by the very one who penned all the words to begin with.
Loved the story just as much the second time around. Now I have Bowling Avenue in two different formats. This will not be the last time, I venture into the land of the South as the characters in your story slowly reveal themselves to others and to themselves as well.
Much gratitude for your penned and audible story telling.
    Knitterly blessings,
    NaomiBelle

  • There will be a way?! OH I AM SO EXCITED. Not moving til I hear more.

  • Forget about the audiobook – how do I get that bass fishing podcast?
    😉

  • It is so delightful that Ann is surrounded with woolens for sound quality. Even the knitting likes the novel!

  • I’m with Belinda. What ARE you up to????? Can’t wait.

  • Awesome! I love my Audible account and will add Bowling Avenue to my Library!

  • Oh my, I love your handknit recording studio! All that wool must have added to the warm atmosphere and low-echo of the sound of your voice. Thanks for the sample–it sounds wonderful.

  • Just a note to let you know how much I enjoy Bowling Avenue. I love slipping into the world you created. I have it downloaded on my iphone and have read it twice already. I read while walking the dog! I hope this will not be your last book of fiction…
